Secondary movement? Loose?

Ok, put the new weights and rollers in this weekend. Thought I was set. Took it out friday night and it screamed! I thought I had a new sled. From 50-70 was a rocket. Thanks Larry at NCY.

Ok, onto the problem. Last year I blew a belt and after I put on a new one I had this squealing sound (while at idle) coming from the clutch area after running for a while. Sometimes it would be there, sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes it would go away with a little boost in RPM. That was last year. This year it squeals almost all the time at idle. I started looking this morning at the secondary. The belt looks like it is seated properly in the secondary as far as embedment depth. However, I notice that the secondary can slide in and out. I don't mean separating the sheaves. The entire secondary moves. I tried tightening the bolt on the outside of the secondary but it was tight. The distance it is moving is the space I can see between the spacer washers and the bolt/washer. It's actually wide gap. I'm guessing almost 1/4". Should I just put some more washers in there to keep it from moving? When the secondary is the whole way in, it lines up with the clutch. So I'm thinking I get the squealing when the secondary goes to the outside and the belt rubs on the clutch.

Am I right? I need this info asap! I am leaving Tuesday afternoon for the "guy's trip" to the UP for 500-600 miles in 4 days.

Don't know what you ride, but on my 01 MM700 that is normal. You need some free play in there. I can't remember the technical explanation but there is one, I've asked before and was told.

As for the belt squeel at idle, that is normally related to belt ride height. Did you measure to see if this is in normal wear level? There are three little bolts on the back of the secondary with small washers under them. If you have excessive belt wear the belt is dropping in the secondary a bit, add washers to bring it back up. Same goes if you put a new belt on, and don't adjust ride height, take washers out if you want to drop in down.
 
I could understand a little movement, but we're honestly talking almost a 1/4 inch! I thought my owner's manual siad the belt was to be down in the secondary 2 mm. By the guage of the eye, I was just below the edge of the secondary. 2 mm is pretty small.

On the motor side of the secondary, there is a gap if I pull the secondary to the outside. I'm just worried that this will cause more damage.

Did I read that right? I didn't check to see if there were any washers behind the secondary. How do you get into them?

Oh, it's a 96 Vmax 600xt.
 
As far as the play in the secondary... that is normal..If you need some re-assurance, give a dealer a call.. Nothing to worry about there.. The squeeling you are getting generally is the center to center being a little on the tight side.. If you can put up with the squeeling it isn't a bad thing... If not you will have to re-adjust the center to center. Nothing to worry about for your trip!! Have a blast..
 
Make sure that none of the washers got caught between the secondary bolt and the collar. You may need to add washers. If the alignment is not real good, this much freeplay could allow it to pull to one side causing the squeal.
 
Ding, I thought the same thing. I could see how the secondary could get shifted off center and have it rub the side.

Any recommendations on how much "play" is enough?


I picked up a couple of washer spacers today just in case. I will pull the secondary off and see if the adjustment washers are there to see if it will make the squealling better.
Can anyone confirm how far down the belt should sit?
 
:twisted: dnale it seems like you know what your doing. had same problem and just cleaned clutches real good (BOTH) Especially primary where belt starts riding up,you probably already did that just thought I would mention it. :twisted: :twisted:
 
reddevil, I cleaned both the primary and secondary with brake cleaner and a scotch pad (a green one). I thought that was the culprit. I'm slowly working out the kinks. I should know by about 7 tonight cause I'll be back at the sled hopefully by that time.

i have a 2003 sxr 600 i had the same problem with the belt squeeling it was my belt deflection there is 3 bolts on the back of your secondary my belt was too tight so i had to take out 3 washers.....as far as your secondary having that much play i do beleive that is normal my secondary has that amount of play too and my sled is spankin new ......i hope this helps

on the back of the secondary there are 3 8mm bolts(this is the wrench size) remove bolts, remove washers(SAVE WASHERS), reinstall bolts, go to dealer and order new bolts, ride cat while waiting for new bolts, install new bolts w/ your saved washers, enjoy till next squeal. washers are often times refered to as shims.
