[b]HELP!![/b] Electrical Problem-1998 SRX 700

:?: I installed a heated shield into the wires for the brake switch(blue+yellow) on the handle bars(wrong wires I think). I lost my headlight, taillight, tach, and the gauge lights after 4 days of riding. All three lights and the tach started flickering on and off for 10 miles then all of a sudden they went out! But they worked fine until that point.

Any help would be appreciated!

One more thing, I have the hand warmers yet. But everything else has no power?

Sounds like you may have fried your one of your voltage regulators. You should probably use the same source as your hand warmers which is on a different regulator.

Thanks, srx_eh, How can I check the voltage regulator to see if it's bad? Are there two regulators?

Not sure what the input and ouput should be, unfortunately the two regulators are different (can't swap). Perhaps you could buy one off the parts forum cheap.
 
Using a volt meter check for 13.5-14.1 volts dc (no load) on the output of each regulator while running the machine. Located behind the instrument panel left side lower louvers.

This might by a little off the mark, but check the wiring harness under the #3 carb. It gets pinched and subsequently worn then shorted, when it gets pinched between the coolant hose under the #3 carb and the bulkhead. My headlights, gauges, taillight flickered also then went out. MRsled directed me to the wiring harness under the engine right under the #3 carb. I found 2 broken wires and 5 others shorting to the frame. check-it out. The heated shield sounds like a coincidence. Just a thought. The wire issue was common on 98-99's.
 
Hey guys I have been checking for electical shorts, no luck yet. I have a question about the voltage regulator(far left one) is it supposed to be normally open or closed when the machine is off?
I tried to ohm it out and it had no reading(OL), is it supposed to be open?
One more thing where can I get a wiring diaghram for a 1998 SRX 700?

Not sure if 'ohming out' the regulator is going to tell you much based on the lack of info. you have for this regulator, ...better to check the voltage output while machine running (one test lead on the output the other on a good ground source). Also make sure your connections are good and test each lead with an ohm meter to frame chassis (should be infinite resistance).
