What Do You Consider High Mileage On a Sled?

9400 on my Viper and it was running poorly. Yanked the motor apart and found 1 stuck powervalve and my exhaust manifold cracked all the way around BOTH sides of the center pipe. Pistons had .005 to .006 collapse, so I replaced them. Cylinders still had crosshatching top to bottom!!. I broke this motor in with Yamalube then switched to Amsoil Interceptor. Inside of motor was clean as a whistle. Endplay and runout were smack in the middle of factory spec. I ride this thing HARD, but maintain it. Reeds were in excellent shape. Don't be afraid of the mileage if it has been maintained.

GO Amsoil!!!!!! ;)!

Have 14300k on my 98 srx and the engine is excelent. I did change crank seals this year to be safe but the cyl. compression and leakdown are both very good and haven't changed since I have been monitoring it which is about the last 10000k :yrules: .

How'd your leak down test go good?? what was your loss???

I have about 12,000kms on my 98 SRX and it runs great, or ran great. Compression is up and it worked like the day I got it. This year I decided to change the crank seals just as a precautionary thing and ended up finding a problem with one of my crank bearings. If I didn't find this it would have caused me some serious problems this winter and some $$$. Yamaha is the most reliable sled I've ever owned but I guess its like anything. They can have problems. I would say after somewhere around the 10,000-12,000kms mark it would not be a bad idea to check them over. Could save some $$$ and down time when the snows on the ground.

Hi guys !

A friends 1994 V-Max 4 750 broke down at the end of last years seaon. Cylinder/piston nr. 2 burned down, in a few days we will tear the engine apart, however we removed the head right after it happened.

The top piston ring is bent upwards (sticks above the piston), and yesterday I discovered that when looking into the exhaust port, I looked directly on the piston pin, so the piston skirts are broken off.

The sled has 13.000km and I don`t think the engine has been touched before.

I also noticed that when I put my fingers on the other pistons and tried to move them back/forth (not up and down, I was looking for sideways motion), and there was ahole lot of movement, it has to be way to much since it was so easy to see. How much should the cylinder/piston clearnce be?. I guess it`s about (atleast) 0,4-0,6mm. I might be overdoing it but it looked insane.

Could it be that the piston/ring was so worn that the piston started slamming in the cylinder and eventually the skirt broke off?.

My SRX has 5500km so I look forward to 5500km more with no problems.. hehe:).

Wellwell

I think the liquid twins were the weak point in Yamaha,s line up( Exciter, Vmaxs) so I would say that high milage would be about 5000kms..With the fan cooled twins and the tripples I would say high milage would be 8-10,000 kms...If you have a chance try to get a tripple they are more relilable, better performance and better on gas...My Phazer 2 9,000 miles, my 2000 600 Venture 4500 miles, my buddies 95 V Max 4 close to 17000 miles ( looking at rebuilding after this season)

no such thing as high mileage on a yamaha. my parents have a 98 vmax 600 twin with 16000km and a 01 vmax delux with 19000km and both still run like the day they came from the factory. i sold my 2000 sxr 600 last year when it had 13000km and it was running perfect

i do think if the piston moves around enough it could cause the skirts to break off or crack on the pistons. i also have an 90 xlv 540 with 12000mi on her not the most comfortable of fuel efficient but its bulletproof.

19 000kms on mine, runs absolutely flawlessly and very strong, and very good compression, just like the day it was new.

High mileage on a yamaha is a much larger number of kms than any other brand. High mileage for a yamaha for example sake, 20 000kms, and for a polaris to be considered "high mileage", only 12 000kms would have to be reached. Just my experiences here of what iv seen.

What!!!!........Gota disagree on this one big time....

all my twins are bullet proof, all over 5,000 miles one has 11,000 and have'nt
layed a wrench on any of them, all stock not beat on,well taken care of.

i don't think they were a weak point at all,no more than any other mill.
