still not enough weight transfer

I bought a set of bender racing adjustable transfer rods, and have them on my 1997 Vmax 500XT. It makes great power and pulls hard (for a 500) but even with me fat *** as far back as possible I can't get the skis off the ground more than an inch. I have the rods fully adjusted for maximum gap and the thinner shim installed on top, stock shim in the bottom. Straps are extended fully and front (rear) spring to max, rear (rear) srping is set middle of the road, but I'm heavy (240lbs+). front springs are 2nd to lowest setting as well. It does hook pretty good , 72 picks in the center, I thought it would pull the skis.....


P.S. And before someone chimes in with "you don't need any more than that for transfer..blah blah whatever....." Shut up! I know it's not ideal, but I like It!!!!! LOL :yam:
 
you need a stiffer front spring in that skid, xtc comes with a spring that is very week. check with maximum or pionier they sell a spring that will cure this, it will also handle large bumps better.
 
cool thanks viper I'll look into a stiffer spring .... the track is new camoplast .85 lug with 1 inch picks, I should have mentioned that earlier n20iroc
 
yup BTV is right, the center spring on those is WEAK. Not very ride compliant with that softy in there either.
 
according to the yamaha suspension set up manual, you will achieve the most transfer with the front (center) skid shock in the stiffest position, and the rear shock in the softest. like others said, you should get a stiffer front spring to make up for the softer setting in the rear so your ride doesn't suffer too much. the stiff "center" spring will act like a pivot point and allow your skiis to lift better.

dont worry, i like wheelies or trackies.......

(thinking outloud...........wonder what would happen if the transfer rods dissapeared? as long as the skid wont extend so the rear scissors will go over center...i bet you could wheelie for ever.....mabye similar to the transfer enhancement kit mpi sells.)

but im a long track guy, so PLEASE take everything i say with a grain of salt...although the video on suspension setup is dry, it is very informative.

Thanks for ringing in c-bolt, I wondered about taking the rods off altogther as well but I think alot of bad things will happen to the handling over bumps if I did....might drive like a cat! lol

I am going to try the spring first and see what that does and then possibly modify the transfer rods further if that doesn't help ... but I think the spring will do it
 
If you really want to wheelie just unplug one of your spark plugs. My nieces 340 Ovation and my sister in laws 380 Doo wheelie like mothers on blacktop and hard pack (with me 215lbs on them). The trick is either have a lot of HP and serious transfer or not to have any horsepower and have a lot of weight hanging out the back.
 
Small world. Whats the clutch engaging at? I can carry the skis at will, and im a light guy. 165 pounds. I dont run studs, just a 11/4 track, adjustable transfer rods and long travel set up similar yours.
 
well you may have a slight horspower advantage .... and the sx has stiffer springs than the vmax. I think once i get a stronger spring in the center as Viper suggested, it will be all good.
 
Have you tried sitting on the sled and haveing someone look at the gap between the top of the transfer rod adjuster and the plastic washer? Maybe the springs are set too light and alows the suspension to compress to a point where there is not enough movment left at the transfer rods to let the front end come up. Check it out before spending money for parts.
I ride an SRX 700 without tranfer rod adjusters. I tried messing around with the front spring with little difference in weight transfer. I simply took the stock spacers off the top of the transfer rods and replaced them with some 1/8" thick ones. I now have the front spring backed way off for better slide wear and softer ride and I can still pull the front end up at any speed. Difference is, I only weigh #180. I have a nephue that weighs over #300 and when he takes my beast for a ride, he can't pull the skis up cause he weighs a lot more than me and has the suspension squished down.
I don't believe HP has all that much to do with pulling the front end up: Years ago a guy I know had a little 300 Enticer. He took the front limiter strap off and could nearly flip the little guy over backwards. Confussed the hell out of me because I was riding a 440 SRX at the time and couldn't get it to hook worth crap.

the front spring is maxed already I will try and max the rear spring as well and see if that helps delay coupling. The gap is mostly on the top with me sitting on it (240lbs).

My buddy weighs around 190 and he can't get it to pull up either.
