Phazer Mods?

I am currently in the process of building one up a bit. A 91 Phazer II. Oversized pistons, ported, DG pipe, cold air intake, flatslide carbs from a V Max, reeds, plastic skis and an Xtra 12 suspension out of a Polaris set back to receive a 136" x 1" track. Give me a better ride plus it will be better in the powder. Getting rid of the electric start to shed a few pounds. Should be interesting if I ever get it all together. Have another bone stock Phazer II if it doesn't come together in time. I love those old Phazers.
 
Yeah there great for a beginner sled, haha but my beginner sled is, bored, ported, with aaen pipe, cold air kit, reeds, crank work done to it, and clutching. making 85-90HP. Looking at new carbs and suspension.
 
some 38 carbs,sx cut pistions,(from bender)...ummm.im trying to think what else was done to mine...get the clutchs dialed right in..
 
Ya I hear you. It is not that long ago that a 500 cc would have been considered a high output sled. I have liked the style since they first came out and enjoy riding it.
 
What is stock HP? Also, I have foam pod air filters, does this hurt or enhance performance?
My mods are out of necessity rather than performance upgrades. The previous owner did not treat her kindly. I swear it was rolled about a dozen times.
I've done a lot of small things that are nothing to most of the people on this board but to a novice it was a crash course in snowmobile mechanics. Last year I actually had to bolt in steel plates to hold the front bolts of the rear suspention in after I hit a stump that was just under the snow. It almost tore the bolts right out. I'm suprised myself with that repair.
I love this sled.

ahh yes the good ol days

for a phazer we used to run 38mm round slide carbs, bender cold air kit, porting, modded pistons, Aaen pipe, comet 102 clutch, and never!, I mean never!!!- cut the heads or run the stock butterfly carbs. If you start modding it and do any of the last 2 things, it would burn down everytime out, they actually are very impressive built up, they would really get up and go.

The pod filters may be better than the airbox but you are still drawing hot underhood air. Getting cold air to the carbs will help a lot. A cold air package will help but they still draw partial underhood air. I sealed one so that the only air drawn was outside air. Or do the easiest thing that will also add life to the underhood mechanicals and give you better braking: run without the side panels. The only drawback is if you are concerned about the looks of the sled without the panels. You will need to change carb jets with any addition of cold air. Fuel mileage will also improve.
I also had to add tunnel reinforcing plates at the front suspension mount bolts after damage caused by getting T-boned by another sled.
 
I am building one for my 9 year old son. Okay , I want to ride it too... What pipe and track works the best on these. Mine is a 1991 Phazer II.
 
nope it fits pretty nice, its really CLOSE to the tunnel and it sometimes rubs a little going over non-stop bumps but it rarely happens. i didnt install it either the guy i bought if from put the track on, i guess he did something to make it fit.

The Polaris Xtra-12 is like a sinking submarine in anything else than pure hard packed trail riding !

Bad approach angle for deep snow, loose of top speed and horrible in big bumps.
