curious about what everyone thinks about the xtc's and sx's.....i was looking at getting a 99 sx600 but never considered a xtc not sure i like the xtc 600 twin as i really havent heard much about them ive read and been told the sx600 tripple is a rock solid machine....im a yamaha nut and have always known their stuff to be incredibly reliable so if i can get a xtc thats in good shape i might....wondering about the pros and cons of xtc compared to sx machines...whats the differences etc etc.....thx for info!
id like to get a 700 in the xtc or either a sx 600 or 700 unless the 600 twin xtc is a good reliable motor too....
thx in advance!

The twins are extremely reliable engines, not to take anything away from the tripples. If you are looking at customizing (clutching, exhaust, jetting) stay with the tripple they are easier to find parts for new and used. The XTC has a very soft comfort ride to it, the sx is firmer. Just depends on what you want to use it for....
P.S. beware the older 600 twins did have an update on the pistons, I am not 100% but i think it was that factory ones were hard on skirts or something. If you look at a used 600 make sure it has the updated pistons, check with a dealer to find out what years were affected.

I have a 600 XTC with ~3500 miles on it. Runs like new.
But if it were me, to do it all over again.... I'd go for the SX instead... more HP

XTC twin or triple are both great engines. You can stiffen up the rear suspension on the XTC with a spring from Yamaha for $55.
The 600 twin stock is kinda doggy as is the 700 triple, but both respond to the head gasket mod and clutching change - look here:
MODS THAT WORK
The 1999 Yamaha 600 is a triple if I remember right.
Good luck finding your sled .....

Stock skis on my XTC were metal with ski skins. Heavy and no keel to speak of. First mod I made was some used USI's. Handles much better now.
There are some carb mods that can be done to the 600 twin to wake them up a bit. I noticed a difference after we did mine. I'm a little hesitant to do the head gasket mod as I don't want to blow up my motor with the extra compression, bad gas problems that can be encountered, and long open throttle runs.

i did the gaskets and shaved i think 25 thousands off my head and that was a couple thosand miles ago of and gutted the airbox. could run with a stock sxr 600 no problem. well my bros buddies. thing ran great and prolly still would if i didnt hit that tree i jsut dont feel like puting back together but i think i might i can get a bender motor for it for 100 bucks so i think i might just make a drag sled out of it. we have drags down here 2 or 3 tiems a year just for a throphy and braging rights.

Yep, XTC has metal skis from the factory, any Yammie plastic skis will bolt on too, you just need to get the longer bolts. Did that to my dad's and he said it was like a whole new machine.

besides the graphics, the skid, the xtc has a better skid it has bearings at key points versus bushings in the xt skid. plus better shocks the xtc has KYB shocks witch are rebuildable.

yup the XTC has gas bag shocks, the XT has oil, and the different bearing/bushing setups that go along with the different shocks

i wouldnt say the sx700 is kinda doggy, yes the free mods make it breath a bit more, but a re-jet helps as well, but definatly not doggy.the twins were down on power a bit but still a good machine.i would take the 3cylinder 600-700 over the twin tho...

ok so now im into two different posts about essentially the same thing so ill keep this brief... price not being an option and assuming both in good shape... which would u rather have 98 xt700 or 97 xtc600???? that is looking like my option for a sled.....thx zak

for me it would be the 98 XT 700 hands down, i LOVE those triples, twins dont even come close in my opinion. Easier to put gas shocks on the 700 than it is to put a 700 in the 600, much cheaper as well.
