Should the engine coolant temperature light come when the machine is running at an idle for 15 or so minutes on my 1997 SX 700? Can the liquid cooled machines idle indefinately without overheating? The current temp. is about 48 degrees. Just replaced the coolant, bled from the rear and top of cylinder heads like the service manual called for. I recently purchased the machine, and have never run it that long before.

thanks,
Dusty

I have a 97 600 You cannot idle forever you need snow on the coolers that run under your foot rest! My sled has idled maybe that long but never has gotten "HOT" I know when I changed coolant I seemed to add a little after running getting the air out!

But he said the air temp was 48. That's pretty warm to sit idling for 15 min. Wouldn't surprise me if it did overheat. Run a hose on the heat exchangers if you need to test/tune at that warm air temp.

Yea........but you think you should still be able to run it that long before
she got to hot.

But then again it's a trip, im used to twins.

Keep checking that coolant level! I am telling you I have drained & filled 4 times this summer doing differant projects! & there still gets air pockets! Start the sled & run your hand clockwise around the sled to make sure it is warm all the way around make sure it is circulating!

had a problem with my 97 sx 700 similarly overheating.....i eventually figured out that the teeth on the impeller in the water pump had worn out..... it was just spinning on the shaft and not circulating the coolant....try this to check see if ur pump is working ok:
when the engine is cool pull the coolant line cap off the hose and start the motor up and let it idle......if the water pump is ok u shud see the coolant running thru the line pretty quickly
