I just pulled the power valves on my 02 SRX for cleaning and found the clutch side cylinder power valve had the cable pulled right out of it. The valve is not carboned up and it moves freely in the cylinder. Has anyone seen this? Also the spark plug boot had all the innerds rusted out.

this is a fairly common problem, vibration causes the valve top to wear, and carbon on the valve causes the cable to pull through the rather soft valve material.

I had two cables pull through on my '02 SRX. If you buy new powervalves, you'll notice that Yamaha updated them with a thicker slotted area for the cable. If you upgrade, you'll probably not have a problem anymore. By the way, I keep mine extremely clean and they still pulled through.

What cleaner do you use to get the carbon off. I tried Hog Wash ( soaked for 2 days), Greased Lightning ( started to attack the aluminum) and Motorvac a product used in WW2 for cleaning the carbon scorring in the barrels on battle gunships. I was told not to scrape with anything harder than my fingernail.

I put a fine wire brush on my drill and cleaned 'em up in no time. Got tired of the razor blade trick as it took too much time and drew too much blood. The wire brush/drill combo will not take the finish off either.
