Starting Problems SRX???

THANKS DAMAN for th RIGHT ANSWER!!! I;ve been watching and reading this post for a bit and I just sit back and shake my head!!! The guy with the starting fluid idea hopefully has some REALLY GOOD health insurance!!! NEVER,,, i mean NEVER use starting fluid on a sled... if it is -20 outside and you have to blow a blowdryer at the motor and the airbox intake for 10 minutes,, thats still better than a can of ether!!!!! THE MOST CRUCIAL step to starting a motor that has been sitting in storage is to use PREMIX (hopefully premixed with synthetic oil)!!!! I think the ketchup and mustard squirt bottle is a FANTASTIC IDEA!!!!!!! when I shut my sleds off for the evening, I pull the CHOKE and kill them with too much fuel!!!!!! It is a LOT EASIER to start them the next morning when its -20 outside and they have been sitting there for 12 hours!!!!! KEEP AWAY FROM STARTING FLUID!!!!! its NOT an 8.5 to 1 car engine!!!!! Gary Oles nosboy :nos:

Fill it up every spring and put stabil in it. Never any problems... Never put starting fluid in it. I did it once and then my cousin explained to me that this is terrible for my engine!!! Yammies are cold blooded, but once they are going they are great... Never fogged and I think theat is a waste of time and overkill,,,,kind of like cleaning the powervalves every 500 miles like some people do.

depending on the film strength of the oil that you use and the amount of alcohol in the fuel, fogging COULD BE very beneficial to your sled!!!!! Let me explain.... ALCOHOL, weather METHYL or ETHYL,,, ABSOLUTELY HATES OIL....... ALCOHOL has a way of breaking down oil into something equivalent of a 36 grit sandpaper!!! (not really, I'm trying to make a point)!!! running the sled out of fuel isn't really good for anything, because over the summer, the aromatics in the fuel have a tendancy to deteriorate the EMOLLIENTS in rubber (especially the ALCOHOL)... If you ever go to the dragstrip and see the alcohol cars,, they HAVE TO change their motor oil after EVERY PASS!!!! Its because the alcohol gets into the oil and captures all of the moisture!!!! now KNOWING that alcohol captures moisture, just stabilizing the fuel (good idea) isn't enough!!! When you shut off the sled by choking it, the gas and oil and alcohol is ALL AROUND your motors insides!!!! The gasoline vapors are NOW eating away your emolliets, the ALCOHOL is trapping all of your moisture (moisture is a byproduct of combustion) and the OIL on your insides of your motor is being ATTACKED by the alcohol in the fuel!!!! THe moisture attaches to the BARE cylinders ( I call it the cold beer can in the summer effect) (condensation).. ALL THROUGHOUT the storage period days and the cooler nights (spring and fall) and does a NUMBER on starting to DESTROY your cylider bores and bearings and crank!!!!! After 6 months of sitting, you, without squirting a LOT of oil in the plugs,,, try and squirt some GASOLINE without oil (premixed) and pull it ABSOLUTELY DRY 50 or 60 TIMES till she starts!!!!!! Bu pulling it DRY and oxidized (it doesn't have to be rust colored to be oxidized) you have just WASTED 1 SEASON of the life of your motor!!!!!!! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON (except stupidity) to pull your engine DRY for 50 or 60 pulls!!!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??????? If you DONT want to pull the airbox apart every spring, heres what you do.... On your final ride of the season, throw TWICE the recommended amount of STABIL or SEAFOAM ( I prefer SEAFOAM) into your gas tank.... Ride it for about 10 or 15 minutes... SHUT IT OFF with the KEY or KILL SWITCH!!!!! REMOVE thespark plugs (while still hot) (wearing gloves, dummy) and squirt about 10 seconds of FOGGING OIL into the spark plug holes...... (10 seconds each hole)... when you have all the holes sprayed, give the motor about 10 pulls (with the plugs still out)... Spray another 10 seconds in each cylinder hole AGAIN and give it another ten pulls(plugs still out) finally, spray it again the same way, 10 seconds in each hole,,, install the OLD PLUGS and pull it a couple (3 or 4 times) with the plugs installed.... Spray her down with YAMAHA SILICONE (the motor and all the wires, hoses, linkages) (use the whole can if you have to) and put the cover on her and let her hibernate till next winter!!!! You can put it up on jackstands if you want to or spray the whole suspension down with YAMAHA LUBE ZALL (good idea) Mice won't decide to make a home in your sled when theres lube zall all over their pathway!!!! When you first start it up next winter,,, use Fresh fuel and fresh plugs (squirting PREMIX into the cyls)... Yes, you will go through a set of plugs during startup and the heighbors will think your garage is on fire,,, but,,, your motor won't have 2 years of wear on it after only 1 season!!!!! (the best thing is that you DON'T have to pull the airbox all apart) Gary Oles nosboy

The reason I say twice the amount of sea foam or stabil is,,,Seafoam and stabil slow down the atomization process and the volatility of the fuel.... (one of these days, i will tell you how they make it and what it is) It keeps the aromatics from evaporating out of the fuel . When the aromatics vaporize, the byproduct is VARNISH!!! VARNISH drys and gets hard as a rock.... Take a glass baby food jar and fill it with gasoline and let it sit in your garage (with the cover on it) for a year (or even 6 months)... You will understand what I am talking about!!! I will give you a hint as to the main ingredient i stabil or seafoam... body shops use it all the time!!!! Gary Oles nosboy

well said Gary(as always) the only thing i do diff. is i spray the fogging oil in through the boost bottle holes in the intake for 1 min. wile running. i use two cans with the straw through a cork to plug the hole in the boot so no vac. leak happens. then remove and reinstal the boost bottle.

I just spray a little gas in the air box and run it for 10 minutes. After that it starts withing 3 pulls everytime. Like they said, try changing the pluggs. It will foul them if you were playing with the throttle when you were trying to get it going.

NOSBOY, you definitely got me thinking a little more critically about how I am going to do my summerization of my SRX next april. Thanks for that :)

In the mean time, regarding your theory or perhaps fact that pulling an SRX over like 60 times like I did last week is shortening the life of the motor, is it really any worse than pulling a cold motor over at -20F some 60 times in the middle of the winter. My theory, and it could be a weak one, is maybe I am pulling the engine over "dry" in November, but my 10 yr old kid can do the pulling for me as its 55 degrees outside and motor is as loose as can be. I just can't imagine the possible wear from this 1st November startup is any harder on pulling over a cold motor in Feb.

Thoughts?

anytime you pull a cord with DRY cylinders, weather it be 50+ or 50-, you are doing "some" damage to the motor. SCRAPING occurs with a "dry" motor regardless of the temperature.... More scraping in cold temps.well. yes, but not really..... More scraping when the motor is dry from sitting all summer?????? YES DEFINATELY!!!!!! CHOKING a hot motor to kill it is the way to go.. When you start it up the next day, it will still have a film of oil all over, compared to sitting for 6 months without fogging....Remember, you are pulling through a LOT more than 3 piston rings scraping the bores. The WHOLE motor has more resistance when cold!!!! even the recoil spring (especially)!!! Gary Oles nosboy

I just can't understand why you would have to pull the motor over 60 times in the middle of winter??????? PLEASE pull the plugs and squirt PREMIX into the cylinders!!!! My shoulder is hurting just thinking of the pull!!!! someone had a really good idea about a ketchup or mustard bottle....... I'm going to get a french's mustard bottle from the store and squirt the mustard in the garbage can JUST for the bottle!!!!!Gary Oles nosboy

when it sits for a long time,

pre-mix
pre-mix
pre-mix

down the clys. no need to pull that many times gezzzzzz!!!

Hard Starting SRX's, Primer?

I have 3 SRX's, 99, 00, 01. They pull over easy, even in cold weather, but if they sit for more than a day it takes 40 pulls or more to start them. Obviously the gas is draining back to the tank. Never had this problem with my '97 SX700's. It is a pain in the *** pulling 3 plugs and dumping gas in them every time I want to run. Has anyone put a primer on these? If so do you have pictures? If I'm going to do this I want a clean looking installation. All 3 sleds are very clean and stock looking, other than the M10's.

Thanks,

Rob

kill it with the choke next time,,should light right up then.,also check choke
plunger circuit(dirt) and set to spec.

don't have that problem on my '01

And I thought my sleds were hard to start in the cold, didn't want to say anything. But it seems like a normal thing.Mine would take like 50 pulls in the fall, but now I squirt some premix into the cylinders and bang...2 pulls she is running.I think incorporating a promer bulb in the fuel line would be the answer.I may order a couple of them and try it out.Cheap to buy.

Learned the gas in the cylinder trick years ago with my 97 SX. Usually about 2-3 pulls and she is running. For some strange reason my Viper doesn't always need it.
