My initial response - man is this a different sled then my MM600 141. I dont know what i was expecting exactly but they ride totally different. At the end of the day i was really starting to like it and felt pretty good on it. Way more plush of a ride, it soaks the bumps up like they arent there.
The viper gets on its side SO easily compared to the MM, i barely have to lean any weight on it to carve it in the pow. In fact i have to try not to pull it over too hard and dump it on its side. On the MM i had to pull it waaay harder to get it to lean this way. It feels like it has a higher center of gravity. It is a good bit more tippy on the trails, but i can deal with that since i only ride trails until i get to the good stuff.
It has a much heavier feel to the steering and was almost a handful with its darting. I am sure these are just things that i need to adjust til i get it right. Any suggestions on what to adjust for this?
I got it up to about 85mph tops at around 8600rpm on the trail. Stock jetting running at 7000-9000ft. Does that sound right? How fast do stock mtn vipers usually go? Mind you the sled only has 50 miles on it now. My buddy on his 98 MM700 pretty much smoked me. I got him off the line but then he was gone.
Any ideas on what to change/tweak are welcome. Sorry for the long post.

If I'm reading you correctly, you have a holdover or equivalent bone stock 03 Mtn viper. If this is correct throw the skis as far as you can and put some real mtn skis of your choice on it. And if you're running stock sealevel -20 jetting at 7000 feet you are probably pig rich. If you always ride at that altitude jet for it. If not put your choice of compensator on, vari, temp,or atacc.
my nickel
Transfer kit from mountain performance, and a real seat would also probably be good things, but I have neither so can't really comment. Get the jetting and skis sorted and that will be nice start.

Yep, its bone stock except I put a set of 06 mtn skis on it before i rode it.
Smart move with the skis. I know mine is plenty "darty" on packed trail with the simmons skis (but I need to adjust them) they are pretty skinny up front and mine can be down right squirrelly at times, may just be the nature of the beast. I'd work on getting the jetting dialed next and then clutching.
Do you always ride at the 7-10 elevation? If so you're down about 20% on power from an already heavy and slightly underpowered sled. Diets are good things for MTN vipers, well Yamahas in general. They wake up very nicely with triple pipes but if you go there I'd recomend going all the way and getting ceramic coating, triple pipes make power and power makes heat and lots of it, and in my experience you lose abit of the legendary Yamaha reliability.blah,blah,blah.

I usually ride 6000-9000. I know i should rejet, just havent done it. What size jets should i be running? I dont think i am going to get triple pipes, id like to keep it on the quiet and worry free side. I know once i have it dialed in i will be fine with its stock power.....for a while anyways. I dont want to go dumping money into it when its perfectly capable for me in its stock form. I say that now...maybe next year, who knows.
I adjusted the ski alignment today, they were so far out of whack it wasnt even funny. Hopefully that will make a big difference in the darting.
Do you have pipes on yours erik? What kind of speed do you usually see on packed trails?

Slp triple pipes on mine.
Packed trail, whats that. Very little grooming goes on up here, I think i've seen 85 on the dream meter before I ran out of room, plenty left though. Most trails around here 35-40 is really pushing it on the fabulous yamaha skid, but thats not why I bought it. When I'm rich and famous I shall have a dedicated bump sled and a mountain sled.
Owners manual should have a jetting chart, or somebody else may chime in, if not I'll get some numbers for you tomorrow.

I had 145 mains across the board, fuel screws out about 2.5 to 3 turns, Piolets I can't remember for sure. Block off all the under hood air " All " and install MPI air vents behind the windshield. Suck up the limiter strap to about 20 MM, set shocks in rear to soft FRA on medium. Gear down to 20/40, and maybe take a look at the Hartman clutch kit that I have for sale.
It sounds like we ride about the same elevation. Boss seat was the best with Simmons skis. You have to ride these way different than the Mountain Max for sure.
I must add, mine was box stock.

Cool, thanks for the input. How much difference does the air intake kit make? Do those kits change the way you have to jet? I am gonna ride it like it is again this weekend before i get a chance to re-jet. But i will definitely jet it before my trip to BC tho.
I dont really plan to put anymore money into it this year. As good as pipes and a boss seat sound, the money will be better spent on my upcoming vacation. Same with gears, i think i am gonna ride it like it is for this year and see how it treats me. I will try the suspension like you said and see how it rides.
Thanks, Grant

I found with mine, there was no jetting change for the cold air filters. It ran well in most all temps. I rode almost all the time with carb heat off, only turned on below 0.
When these things pulled hard in deep snow they injest the hot underhood air and would almost always bog out at the most inoppertuine time next thing you know your buddies are pulling you out.
Mine would spin the track in a heart beat so I dropped the gearing one tooth on top and it was pretty good. It would ease out of a problem with out so much track spin.
If you dont spend any money on anything else, jet down, Install the air intake and change that top gear. You'll probably be in it a little over a $ 100 and you will be a much happier sledder.
Good luck
