My first posting :-) I´m a reborn snowmobiler since last season. I bought my srx last vinter and have been riding it approx 500km last winter enjoing every second of it. During my pre-season check up I decided to clean my power valves. I read the tech section, especially the chapters dealing with powervalves http://www.totallyamaha.com/snowmobiles/aaTECH/YPVS/YPVS.htm
http://www.totallyamaha.com/snowmobiles/aaTECH/Exhaust Valves (1).htm
and started off. After removing the 4 allen head screws that hold the valve assembly to the cylinder I found the following... (se picture). To be able to push out the broken pv I removed the exaust. When trying to pop the broken pv out I felt that it was really stuck, so instead I tried to push it just a little bit into the cylinder. Doing that I felt that the pv is bent in the cylinder so its impossible to remove it the "regular" way. I tried to remove it by pushing it into the cylinder, removing i through the exhaust, but the pv-piece seems to be to big to be able to get out that way.
My questions are:
1. How should I get the pv out of the cylinder? I´m thinking of removing the cylinder head, trying to remove it that way. Anyone think that´s possible?
2. How could this have happend? With my fingers I can feel the pv and it feels like the pv is upside down. A previous owner must have playing around with it, and now I will have to pay for it... (one pv cost approx $150 here in Sweden, and when checking up on the other two pv´s I found out that one was MISSING, and the last one was intact, but really stuck. Managed to get it out though, thanx tech pages :-)) So now I´m in the need for two new pv´s...
3. Anyone here that has experienced the same thing? Strangely, I haven´t noticed any power loss, but the last snowmobile I ran, previous this one, was my Phazer back in 1993. That could explain it I think...
Thanks for a knowledgeable community! /Fredrik
Edit: 9th dec -05 added pictures of the mess... It will take a while to grind that little fellow down...

thats a heck of a mess. i would pull the cylinder off and try it that way. if all else fails, get a new cylinder.

Might as well pull the head and cyl., sounds like you have bigger problems than just new power valves, but cannot say for sure as the sled is not in front of me. Pull the head and take pictures. Post back.

one was MISSING? i've had maybe a washer or nut or bolt left on the bench after working on stuff, but never something as large as a powervalve! lol... maybe the guy went to clean the pv's, found a cable pulled through, looked into the price of a new one, and just put it back together(without one).. he should be ashamed of himself !! anyways, sorry to hear about the mess and hope you have better luck gettin her up and running.

If you liked your srx last winter with only two pv's and possibly only one operating properly, you will really love it when its running right.

I had the same EXACT thing happen to me...TWICE! The first time it happened I had to remove the cylinder..and still I could not pull the broken valve out either way. What I had to do was , from INSIDE the cylider, grind the mashed up valve down with a dremel(with small grinding tip) until I could slide it out. Obviously this was very tight, tedious work and not reccommended for everybody...or ANYBODY with really shaky hands..hahaha. But aside from throwing the cylinder in the grabage, it was my only option. And it is obvious what mashed the p-valve up like that, right?.......Yes, the piston! In my case, I didnt have to replace it, but you might want to check yours. The second time it happened I had to pull the cylinder off again. Luckily this time, the broken valve slid right out the inside of the port and did not come in contact with the piston.
As far as buying the sled like that........well yes, previous owner should have been HONEST when he sold it to you. However (and it is sad to say) you are always taking that chance when you buy something used from someone you dont know. Just my $.02. And like Mr. Brady says.....Caviat Emptor!..lol

post some more pics after you get it apart
Thanks for your advises and sympathy. I will try your advise Steve, since you have experienced this before, poor you. Tonight I will pull the cylinder and try use a dremel to grind the valve down. I think thats a god way to get it out, as you say. Regarding the piston, I can feel it through the exaust and from what I felt it seems to be ok, but I can´t really tell for sure until I have taken a closer look at it. I´m keeping my fingers x-ed
I will keep you guys updated with pictures (hopefully with better quality).

( Off topic: the next time (if there is a next time) I buy an SRX I will definately check the pv´s BEFORE I buy the sled... I won´t kill the guy I bought it from, but I really don´t like what he did . The thing is that if I hadn´t found this forum, I would probably never have checked the pover valves, and never found out what I was missing (a stable of horses).
During the winter I have raced a friends mountain srx700 -98 lots of times and my was in front every time, regardless of driver. Mine excelled with both better acceleration and higher top speed (181km/h as maximum, on icy surface, according to the gps). So I was quite pleased with the performance, perhaps I thought the top speed was a little bit low. Imagine the result this winter )

If you do the Dremel thing, be very very very careful not to come in contact with the cylinder wall while grinding the p-valve. Just keep a very steady hand and take your time.

Power valves
I feel very embarassed here. I posted the other day how my SRX has over 5000 miles and I have never checked the power valves. I rode the sled last week and it seems like it rides great. I am going to pull these apart next weekend. From what I read here the odds that they are F***ED up is really good. Is there any way of telling if they are working without taking them apart? How do you go about aligning them once they are cleaned?
If it's any indication I can still pin the speedo just like when it was new.

Power valves are ALWAYS worth an inspection.....escpecially on the SRX's You cannot really check them w/out taking them apart. There are only four 3.5-4mm allen head bolts holding each one in. The toughest one to get to is the one by the exhaust pipes. You have to remove the pipes to get to 2 of the bolts all the way to the left. Check em, see if they are intact and give them a good cleaning (clean any carbon build-up and residual oil on the valve) while they are out. Go here for the cleaning/adjustment proceedure.
FROM MAIN TY PAGE----Techincal Pages/Snowmobile Tech/Engine/YPVS Cleaning and Adjustment
Maybe somebody can figure out how to post the lnk. But if you do a search of other posts, there are plenty relating to power valve cleaning and adjustment.

You can get those two bolts out on the mag side without pulling the pipes, but you should pull the pipes anyway after you are done cleaning the valves in order to adjust them.

Thanks!!!!!!! I am going to do this next weekend
Thanks!!!!!!! I am going to do this next weekend
Pictures added to my first post.
Now the cylinder lies on the kitchen table. Time to start the grinder :-) . I will let it take time. Lets ses what happens during the weekend, I will keep you informed. The pv is quite smashed up by the piston. Remarkably the piston shows few signs of hitting the pv. There is a little bit of an angle on the edge of the piston, where it has hit the pv, but other from that it seems ok. The cylinder has a couple of tiny scratches, hardly possible to see, or feel (see pictures).
I added a picture of the only intact pv I found on my srx, cleaned and ready to be put back.

Looks like a little blow by on that cyl.,
pretty clean for 5k what kinda oil ya use????

I agree, looks like a little bit of blow by I will change the rings to see if that will fix the problem.
Now the broken power valve is gone from the cylinder. I gave up using a grinder and went to a "cylinder-workshop" in town. They fixed it in no-time, charging me only $12. It was definately worth it!
Im excited to put it all together and see how it will run

wow you definately have some blowby in there, how many miles on that bad boy? Definately going to want to get some new rings in there.
