How to remove broken, bent and stuck power valve?

I use semi-synthetic 'OKQ8 Skoter TT', a test winner! see http://www.okq8.se/okq8_2/smo/pdf/OIL.pdf (in Swedish ;-))

My sled has apprx 4200miles on it and more to come :-)

Below, the cylinder without the stuck power valve!

Hey Frheu,

I Had the same mess that you did with your powervalves. Make sure that your servo is working for the powervalves after you get this thing back together or you will see this problem again.

Having been following this thread, I pulled the powervalves on my Viper for the first time in 3000 miles. Fortunately, the cables were all attached and all three slid right out. Scraped the bigger chunks of carbon off and reassembled. I did have to replace the middle cable, which had worn through the outer sheath from rubbing on the (Bender) middle pipe.

Great thread. I'm sorry for frheu's trouble, but the situation is a great learning experience for him and for me. I agree, this would be a great time to at least rings to all three cylinders, at 5000 miles.

What is it that you guys are seeing that indicates blow-by?

If you look at the piston you will see where it's black stained under the top
and bottom ring in spots that's exhaust getting by the rings, that's a no no.

Thanx for the advice. I will check the servo when adjusting the pv´s.

Haven´t put the motor back together yet... At christmas time it´s not to popular to disappear into the garage. Hopefully I will find some time to put it together next week. Now I have all the parts (I thought the pv´s were expensive, but that was nothing compared to those small rings. I paid $75 for a pair. Yamaha really knows how to rip people off.), so it´s up to me to finish what I have started.

I will post a follow up with my thoughts of my "new" motor. Now we have snow here so it´s just to take it out for a ride when I´m done.

that's a nice, clean powervalve--- how did you get it like that? i couldn't get mine that clean!

2 words...
GOO GONE!

To bad I wasted time cleaning 3 valves when at the time I did not know they were junk. All 3 cables yanked right out of them from them being stuck. Still trying to figure out why I had a mess in mine after 2800 miles. It seems like there was a TON of oil getting in there. Could my oil pump be to rich???

Got mine back together but I have to adjust them yet. As mentioned...can't really disappear the day before Christmas if I want to even think about getting lucky this weekend...=)

But I have to say...the goo gone instantly melted/liquefied ANY and ALL gunk off the valves and housings. (and they were bad) I used Q-tips and worked from the inside out when it came to the housing the valve sits in.

Ah so... ;)!

So, if you saw that on your sled, would you replace just the rings? Any advantage to replacing the pistons at the same time, even if they look OK? Would it be adviseable to do anything to the cylinder, like re-hone it lightly?

you would have to check the min spec for the skirt wear ,then know if you need pistons as well. You dont need to hone the cylinder for new rings, the plating is very hard and really your not going to do anything to it with a fine hone. The rings have a coating on them to help them seat to the nikasil.
