Every year in the U.P. the trails open on 12/1 - however, muzzel loading season does not end until 12/12 - and every year it is the same old song and dance - the private land owners get upset because they don't want anyone riding on their property until muzzel loading season ends - well then why not wait until 12/12 to officially open the trails? - I'm not a brain surgeon, but it sure seems like a simple solution to a major problem every year - would 11 days really mean the end of world? - most years there isn't any snow on 12/1 anyway - how do we change this to avoid this stupidity every year? - if this continues, we are going to have sections of trails that cross private property closed down - let's not let this happen - just my 2 cents!
 
That is how it is in wisconsin, 12/10 the trails open because hunting is so big before that. Although this year because of T-zone and CWD the hunting goes into january in certain regions, that might be interesting.
 
dated start times should be done away with. trails should be opened after the trails are ready. this readiness should be determined by snowmobile clubs and their groomer operators not by a date and time. if you are out before this on state owned and operated trails you should be ticketed and sled impounded for the period of one year. ski
 
have to agree with you ski. was hunting thanksgiving weekend and couldn't believe how many sleds were out. racer-wanna be's and even families. they drove by and looked at me like what the hell you doing out here. not to smart. heard of some guys from illinois talking at toby's in trout lake about riding same weekend, claimed someone shot at them. called the sheriff and they were the ones who got a ticket for riding before trails were open.
 
Do any of you guys know who sets the trail opening dates? - there are different dates (I just found this out) for different trail systems in the U.P. - seems like such a simple thing to correct, and it is always a big mess every year!
 
Most areas allow snowmobilers on trails during hunting season but you must wait until the sun goes down. I beleive they open at 6 or 7 p.m.
 
I say during muzzel loading season the state should also allow land owners to purchase a trespasser tag.
During the stated dates a land owner can legally shoot any fool that feels they're above the law or don't appreciate that the private land sections of the trail network are made available due to the generosity of the owners. They could have a 2 a**hole limit.

All I can say for my area STAY OFF THE PRIVATE OWNED LAND TILL TRAILS OPEN. We keep loosing trails because guys dont read the "private property" signs. I do use the crown land prior to trails opening but not private owned land.
 
I agree with Ski.

In Michigan you can ride on the trails between 11am-2pm and after sunset. I think trails should be closed until the groomers and clubs say they can open. But not prior to the end of Firearm (this includes muzzleloaders) deer season...

I second it! MSA should propose a new policy for opening of trails to the state. They are the ones that can get it done. Everyone is anxious for the first ride. Private landowners should be respected and tag for trespassers is a little extreme but I am a deer hunter also and understand. Never felt good aboutallow snowmobiling during hunting season, those hunters have guns and could get a little upset with someone riding on their land. I remember seeing a sign on Bose Blanc Island that said "No Trespassing Sight Impaired Hunter".
