fired up sled for first time this year. started up on 3rd pull. rode for 5 miles, then motor died. I thought I hit the kill switch. not the case. two pulls and she started, ran for about 50 feet and the motor made a big pop and quit. I couldn't start then. pulled plug and no spark. Put the plug back in and figured to give her one more shot and fired up. was taking it back to house and was back firing intermit. pulled in shop and can't fire up. pulled all 3 plugs and get a spark once in awhile. ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!
Ever since I bought new,onc inawhile it fires up for a second then quits. then I pull again and runs fine.

i would think it might be the coile packs is it no spark on all three or just one plug

Intermittent faults are the worst to find. Pray its a rub spot and not a stator.
yep ,sounds like a bad wire, rub thru ...check the harness under the motor!

somthing like that5 happned to me today. the wire goin to my coils were seperated and were making a conetion on that foil paper on the vent taht direxts air torwds teh breaks. it would idle but if i gave it teh gas it would die and wouldnt run if the hood was up. almost teh same thing happed with my buddies XLT 700 but it was a wire goin to the ignition but would only run with the hood up. so id say its most likely a wire some where.

I was looking at it last night. Once in awhile I get a spark on a pull, its a spark on all three or nothing at all. I've been looking at all the wires and haven't found anything yet. How do you check the stator? I checked the wire harness under the motor and looks fine. how do you test the coils? It's kind of odd that all three would be bad at once, but anything can happen.

check the conections for the coile packs you know the ones that go between each pack and the one at the end
Ever since I bought new said:There was a service bulletin for this, it was a small wiring harness and i think a relay to plug into the harness. I don't know if that is causing your other problem, but it is possible. I will look for the part number for the update kit and post.

Hey, I would appreciate it, if you could get the part# for the update kit.
I would like to thank everyone for there suggestions. I have the sled running!!! I really don't know for sure what I did. I went through every connection in the wire harness and sprayed contact cleaner on them and put di-electric grease on them. I did find two connectors that had a little corrosion on them, so I scraped them off. The two connectors were located on the left side of the gas tank by the drive belt. After doing all of that I had spark. Put on 100 miles already. I pray that was it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having the same problem right now with my 700 sx.
Let me know if you get information on the update.

Wow, I was just logging on to post about the same problem! I thanked Yammy a few days ago because he suggested a bad wire, the motor was pulled and sure enough right under the motor was a rub through onto the bulkhead. It was a blue wire heading to the head lights. This is after the stator was replaced and the cdi box (97sx700). So we thought it was finally over, fix the short put it all back together. The sled fired right up for a few seconds then quit sometimes it sparks on one cyl, sometimes not at all, and sometimes it starts and runs for a few seconds. A snomobile mechanic friend thinks it's a bad pulse coil which is that small square unit bundled with the stator. I tend to disagree because both the stator and pulse coil are new. Any suggestions?
Tech Bulletin S2001-002 is for 2001 SRX700F, 2001SX700F, and MM700F.
Problem is:
1. When headlight switch is in the low position, the engine will start but then quickly shut off. The engine will not stay running unless the haedlight switch is put in the high position when starting.
2. The engine will momentarily drop rpm and somtimes shut off once during the first start up. When restarted, the symptom is gone, and the unit will start and run normally.
Cause:
When the Load Control Relay engages at 700 RPM, it can cause a momentary loss of spark due to low ignition system voltage.
Remedy:
If either sysptom presents itself, replace the headlight relay with the Headlight Relay Kit designed to reduce current draw during start up.
Part #:
90891-50137-00 Headlight Relay Kit - includes sub-harness

This is correct, however it will never keep your sled from starting.
First things first, check your grounds for mice chew and stuff like that. Second trace all wires from the coils and make sure they are connected. Second remove the load control relay and see if the sled starts. This removes all lighting/metering and signaling. It is the black relay near the secondary clutch. If it runs after that then your problem is with the lights or signal/meter system. If it still does not run then check the key switch for solid connectivity and also (not very common check the condensers near the ECU/Relays on my 01' SXR). Do not over look the plug caps and check them for resistance should be ~5K Ohms. Doug

So this wouldn't apply for the 2001 SXR600???? Would it????
