I heard a rumor that Michigan law enforcement is ticketing for aftermarket pipes. They're stopping sleds at the trailheads and want to look at your pipes. If not stock they ticket you. I thought they were only ticketing if the DB levels were not under 90. Need info on new law please.

i also heard that if you dont have that big huge ugly registration sticker on the hood of your nice sled you will also be ticketed.

I've heard they are trying to pass legislation to limit Db but it hasn't passed that I know of. They can't ban after market pipes they can only limit the noise level.

vipertom is right they can't just issue tickets for aftermarket exhaust systems, however that being said, I can't think of too many aftermarket systems that are under the legal dB level.
In wi they can ticket you even if it's quiter. You can't modify your exhaust in any way in wi.

What do all the Harleys have for an exhaust? Box stock I'm sure. Some one really dropped the ball there.

Vipertom understand what you are saying about the Harleys but it all comes down to the roads will always be there the trails will not. All it takes is one landowner or one township to close a section of trail and every sledder has lost another section of trail. Everyone please consider this before putting on a louder than stock exhaust system.
NOISE is very high on the list of reasons why a certain trails no longer exist.

I hope this is just a rumor. I've had PSI quads on my Vmax-4 for 11 years, passed many DNR and Sheriff officers on the trail, local law enforcement at the gas stations, and not once have been stopped or asked to raise the hood.

Thats B.S.
I was ticketed for $165.00 in Wisconsin early this year...last season. Just got my sled and took it up north.
I understand the reasoning behind it, now I am heading up there in a few weeks and have a stock pipe for anytime I leave Iowa. Not taking that $165.00 chance again.

If you run a can or pipes you have to be considerate to the landowners and when you are going thru towns. You don't have to use the throttle like an on/off switch. keep the RPM's down when you are running near peoples houses and at gas stops...I try to.

wisconsin will no doubt ticket you if you get stopped and you have aftermarket exhaust. I was referring to michigan, never had any issues there. And yes, as somebody already said it is VERY important to be courteous when you are in towns and around homes to keep the rpms down instead of tearing through like a jockey, just a little common sense. The trails are a priviledge, not a right. I have had pipes on several sleds and never had any trouble, and i tried to be very courteous around towns and homes.

As long as sledders are buying cans just to be loud, people living near trails will complain. So either the aftermarket can thing will die, or snowmobiling will continue to be restricted more and more every year.

If I every get a ticket for my pipes I will be fighting it in court.
If they are targeting snowmovilers they better start on streetbikes, motocross bikes and the loud exhaust on cars. Singling out snowmobilers is not right. I can understand about private land trails but to be ticketed right away they better be prepared for me. I will call it discrimination against snowmobilers. Then what about the economy....what would happen to these companies that sell pipes. Take the yearly sales away from guys like us that purchase pipes and everything that goes with it and bye bye to some performance shops.
There are guys in mt area that rode motorcross and hammer the throttle in the trails that are right next to the houses..or the guys that come home at 3 in the morning and ride Harley's......I totally disagree with the ticketing.

Guy down the road has the loudest street car i have ever heard in my life and the cops don't do a dam thing about it but if were riding in the middle of the woods with no one around for miles and get ticketed for a loud can or pipes. Bulls&#@. I personally don't have a loud sled but there are some obnoxiously loud ones.

We still all live in a free Country and we should be allowed to modify our cars, sleds, bikes whatever...are we going to ticket guys that rebiuld cars and use headers, the street bikes that install pipes and headers. I can understand ticketing some guy with his loud pipes if he is being a hotdog on private property. I am the first one that will be considerate when I head out on the trails but when I get 2 miles in the bush and keep riding further into Gods country dont stop me and ticket me for pipes.
In my area they dont even care if they are quiet pipes. The rule is "Any modified exhaust gets a ticket" cans or pipes.
I am ready to fight this if I get stopped.

better have a warrant to look under the hood if i am not hot dogging. just because dont cut it. unjust search and seizure. i am as courteous as possible when i am around houses and towns. when i need the power out in the sticks i do what it takes to get me out of trouble and no more, no less. they have no reason or ability to ask you to lift your hood as far as i am concerned. ski

So another question comes to mind: Will they be qualified enough to recognize what's stock and what's not? Did they take a 4 hour class on exhaust systems that covers 40 years or so of this sport or perhaps a picture book of what stock systems look like? It should be interesting to see what happens when one would refuse to raise the hood and chase this into the court systems. I would think that the only way to pull this off would be for them to measure Db levels with a meter. This would be their way out. But then the law would have to be specific in that it would have to read at what rpm level or at how many feet from the meter, kinda like how they measure open exhausts on go fast boats.

I am happy to see I am not the only one that would chalange this.
