1995 Vmax not revving past 7000, top speed 65-70

My old red 600 is not spinning past 7000rpm. top speed is 65 or 70, engine seems to run ok not missing. primary or secondary? It looks as if everything is in place.anybody help?

how old is the belt? if thats not the problem i would pull your face plate off your primary and inspect everything such as the weights, rollers. next i would go to the secondary and check the spring and cam buttons and check to see if the secondary is sticking. you'll figure it out that way for sure. just a process of elimination

also check to see if your clutches are aligned. friend of mine had a problem with his srx would not rev past 8000 his clutches were out of wack. i think you need to be revving about 7800 RPM's on your twin 600 if i remember correctly

it sure sounds like clutch problems...belt, mis-aligned, binding.
check them and clean them and replace any worn parts.

Mantonmanic,Yes, look at your primary/secondary clutches. I had the same issue on my 95 vmax back in 2001! Spider bushing not allowing the primary to shift out. rebuilt both primary and secondary since they all wear about the same. Hope this works out for you!

Check front axle bearings. Pull belt off, loosen track on jack stand and see how easy it spins. Check for plugged exhaust pipe.

My '95 will spin to 7800-8000 rpms....... all stock.

Thanks for the help folks,come to think of it there was some growling going on while driving slow from under the hood.

definately get in there and service those clutches. Check all bushings and pins, replace primary spring, look for slop in the rollers, flat spots on rollers and weights, rough sheaves up good with some fine sandpaper, then wash them good with hot soapy water (degreasing dishsoap works well). Check slider buttons in the secondary, as well as the helix bushing. Those are both common wear items in the secondary, as well as the sheave bushing. Cover and sheave bushings on the primary are also common.
