GPS hook up

I have a 01 SRX and was wondering if there is a way to get a 12v DC power source on the sled?
I seen on another post that there is a red wire to the ignition swt. that is 12v DC can anyone verify this, and will running a GPS off this circuit hurt the sled at all??

I also was up in the air about this subject
I ended up putting a deep cycle rechargeable battery in my SRX with a cigarette adapter
in the dash.
From what I read, putting too much load on the SRX's electrical system can cause misfires & running issues

Here some pics of what i did. I only added the battery because my new GPS (garmin 176C) uses a lot more power that my old Legend
And NO, the battery in NOT charged by the sled. I plan to charge in the cabin after riding. I was told that this battery should last 3 or 4 days, runnning the GPS alone.
This battery is a 12v 12Ah 20hr (10lbs with battery box), but you could probably go smaller to save weight

Stang, yes you can power a GPS from your sled, provided you're not pulling too much power. I would have to check but I don't think the red wire is the one you want, if my memory is correct it is blue... If you have your manual you can verify this for sure.

For my connection I had previously wiried in an electric shield... so I made a connector to plug into the heated shield plug that had a cigarette lighter socket and RCA jack on it so I could plug in the GPS and still use my heated shield. And I can tell ya that a heated shield and GPS pull enough power that the handwarmers don't work worth a crap. LOL

Bigmax is right, It's the blue wire if you want to go that route, but I still wanted my handwarmers to work.. LOL

If your referring to my post about using the red unconnected lead by the dash, ...once I got hold of my shop manual I found that this is used to test the power valves (power valve coupler). Sounds like the concensus is the blue tail light wire.

While I was hooking up the GPS I noticed my heated shield is hooked up to the red wire. Since it was installed by the previous owner and I put around 600 miles on it with no trouble I just left it alone.
The GPS I wired into the blue wire up near the guages and the black wire near the same location. Everything works fine! The hand warmer and thumb warmer both work very well, I don't notice any effects on them at all. Same with the shield.
My GPS is the Garmin 162, it only needs 3 watts, and 12-40v DC. With that said does anyone know what I need to keep the GPS powered up under low idle? Its only happened a couple of times and isn't a big deal but the GPS shut off because the mag. wasn't high enough to keep it on due to very low idle speed. The one time was during warm up the idle dropped down to 1k rpm and the GPS shut off.
Do I need a capacitor or somthing to help out??
