Since it's sled season again, I'm getting the fever for mod's. I have a 96 600xt with the old proaction rear. I know anything is possible with the right amount of money, but I'm not looking for that answer. Will one of the newer proaction skids bolt right up into the old style proaction that is on the 96 xt? Is it even worth it? I've already swapped to new plastic skis last year and have thin hg and twin pipes, etc.

I've seen the how-to's for swapping in a new skid into a vmax-4, but these weren't the proaction if I remember right.

Any help?

Any opinion on if it's worth it? Any suggestions for a year/model?

I know the srx's were a "short" travel version so I'd probably stay away from that.

SXR suspensions are great, quite plush yet capable in the rough. Have aluminum bodied rebuildable KYB's, could also put Ohlins on for an even better ride, or get the KYBs revalved if they don't suite your riding style or weight. Viper suspensions are very similar, original non updated 02 shocks were very stiff, can be revalved to be much more compliant as well.

Would there be a better match for the heavier sled? Seeing that the 96xt is a mule and a half compaired to these fly-weight post 96 sleds. Should I go post-2000? I have seen some new rx-1 skids for sale.....That should be in the neighborhood weight-wise but I don't know if that's "too new" and if I go 97-2000 am I just getting a not-as-old version of the same thing I have? I know my rear-shocks are rebuildable.

I would look for a 2000 or 01 SXR
A Viper skid of any year wouls work great as well.
Depending on what year RX1...but I am not 100% sure if all RX1 skids will fit without mods. Someone will chim in to answer better on the RX1.

96 600xt had a great rear suspension in it stock. Get the shocks re-built , and save money for other mods or a newer sled.

I think I looked into the rebuilding part last year. I called max perf I think. I know I should probably get some beefier springs on it cause I've taken my turn at the table.

Are the newer skids no better? Wouldn't something with more travel be easier on my back?

the newer proactions dont have much more (if any more) travel than the proaction in the XT. I believe the XT has 10.5 inches, the newer proactions ahve 11.5 inches. You wont notice that difference, it is all in how the suspension uses it. Didn't know why you were looking to put a new skid in, thought your's was shot or something. If the suspension is in good shape, just get the shocks rebuilt, replace all the bushings in the suspension, check all the bearings and idlers, look for cracks and repair if necessary, and run her. i know the rear h-arm/scissor assembly is weaker on the 96's, my buddy snapped his h-arm in half, the newer ones have a little more bracing.

I'm going up after christmas. Maybe I'll pull it and bring it home with me. Does anyone know what turn-around time on shock-rebuilds is?

if they aren't backed up it doesn't take long at all to actually do the rebuild. Usually a week at the most unless they are way backed up. Just call whoever you are having rebuild them first and see how long it will be approximately.

I had my rear shock revalved at Maxx perf 7 years ago and when it was time to rebuild it 3 years ago had them rebuild it and set it up the same way because it worked so good. The turn around for me the last time was a week but it was early fall then. I makes a BIG difference in the ride and stopped it from bottoming out when going over a series of moguals. I did go to a larger rear spring as well, but only beacuse the stock spring cracked and you can only get HD and extra HD replacements, stock rate in not available.

Do you have some kind of adjustable transfer rods on it? I am running Benders. It makes it alot more fun to ride and gets the weight off the frt end,but be careful. I ran them in the max weight transfer setting too much and with the jumping (yes i like to jump it) it will crack the frt swing arm. the new arm front Yam is much bigger stock/stronger.
I have ridden and compared mine to a XTC and the ride was just as smooth, but i could handle the large bumps better.
I would stick with the XT skid, but i am bias to my XT.

That sounds like what I'll do. I'll probably just pull the skid when I'm up there and bring it home. Everytime I try to adjust anything up there it doesn't usually work because of the cold or what have you. Here I can put it in the basement, soak stuff in pb-blaster to break it loose. I might even go as far as new bearings and bogie wheels when I have it apart. I looked for new springs the other year and couldn't find anything.

I think you want to put a proactive skid to replace your proaction skid,Right? Bender makes a proactive, mono shock that will bolt right in! I believe,

the status on those bender mono's isn't looking too good for this year, a lot of promises that they didn't deliver on, STILL no delivery of the ordered units that were promised back in october.
