Hello All,

I am looking for some inexpensive mods to for clutching and shocks for this 2000 sxr 500. I plan on keeping this sled for another season, but would like to get a little more out of it before I move to the Vector. Any ideas?
 
Check out the user's clutching page from the TY tech page. My set up is great all around, but tune the 8ab's for your motor, 2.4's in both holes might be too much for your particular sled. Set up also depends on how you want it to behave! What kind of riding do you do?
 
Well, to be honest I want it to behave like a viper :) But will settle for this for now. I run between 150 and 200 miles a day when I can. The trails here are sweet in the am and crap in the pm. I am looking to get some more HP out of the engine and some better rear shock setup without spending more than the sled is worth i.e. $1200 for M10 kit wont work.

Looking for more in the low and top end, the 5500 rpm to 7000 rpm on this sled is just fine. Been real spoiled riding a RX1 and Viper the past few times out. I will add dooleys to the front to help out in the soft stuff.The rear shock is real slow to react. it takes about 1.5 seconds for the rear shock to go back to top :( so looking for an alternitive to the stock yamaha rear.
any suggestions greatly appreciated
 
Of course you know it will never be a Viper.
As VMJohn said clutch set as per tech page. Also reed notches or reed spacers will give you better throttle responce.
There are some aftermaket companies that make a racing (thinner) head gasket for that machine.
The clutch, reed notch and thin head gasket are inexoensive mods that will make a big difference to the performance.
 
It might not have the punch of the viper's motor, but a well set up 500 can out corner and out stop a viper any day.

Sounds like the rear shocks in question need some rebuilding. Might as well have them revalved for your specific weight and style, and set it up properly. This should make a huge difference all around.

Next is traction, unless you've got a clutching problem like an over rev. Going with as much lug as you can swing will get you from corner to corner the quickest, forget about top speed :)

I'd shy away from head gaskets on the 500, I've heard both stories, good and bad. Personally, the motor makes enough power to make keeping up with 700's childs play on twisty trails, and the gains to be had from mods aren't worth much at all. Clutching wakes the sled up, but traction has to improve too. On that note, you don't need traction rods to accomplish this, just a great track. I've enjoyed the Camo 9830 very much, but I plan on going bigger next time :)
 
I have my appointment set for this coming thursday @ the dealer. iwent in and disussed some options with them..looks like we are going back to basics with set-up i.e. replace the belt that has been on for 2000 miles with a new one and have the clutch adjusted to it, then rebuild the rear and adjust the front shocks, then try some mods if it still doesn't fit my riding. they told me that a clutch kit could help a small amount but not sure if it was worth it if I was getting a new sled sometime next season. I will let you know what i find after next ride.

I'd start with a 47/41 Dalton helix, then 8ab weights with what ever combo of rivets it takes to stay at 7800rpm. Mine liked 2.4's in both holes. This is with stock springs. Wrap the secondary at 70* for all around riding, more for deep powder, less for ice racing (yeah right!).

Good luck with it. You'll find this clutch set up worth while, and you'll look forward to riding it after every ride.
 
I brought the sled to the dealer today. Of course when I made the appointment he made it for next thursday not this thursday.MY BAD So it gives me a chance to order the parts you are recommending. If it is not too much trouble could you point me in the direction of a parts dealer that I could order these parts from please? and specify the exact parts I want (since I am new to this mod piece). I can bring them to the dealer I am having work done at and have them install them for me. Thanks In advance!!
