I'm having problems with these guys - everthing works but the running lights - trailer lights work fine on friends truck.

Check the connection on your truck for corrosion. Shoot it with some WD-40, then throw some dielectric grease on it. Do you have a multimeter? After cleaning the connection, see if it's even getting power... if it's not, it might be where the trailer harness is spliced into the rest of the wiring.

check the fuses under the hood...there are individual fuses for the trail lights on GM and some others. I know GMs are particularly sensitive....

Its always the ground

LOL!! That's what I told them too - 99% of the time it's the ground. The 1% it wasn't for me I had stuck a screw thru a wire when replacing the tail light - so I guess it was still a ground then too!
