Accuracy of speedometer

Just was wondering how accurate are the speedo's on a 98 sx?

I had a 97SX...speedometer accuracy was pretty much a joke..as has been virtually every Yamaha snowmobile I've owned since 1984. Most Yamaha's IME run about 8-10% error on the fast side. NEVER have seen one err on the slow side.

Not to point the finger at solely at Yamaha...I bought a Bushnell Speedster radar gun a few years ago and I'm confident that speedometer "optimism" is common in the industry across all manufacturers.

The thing that's been most interesting to me is that the speedometer error across all the sleds I've owned has been pretty consistent as a percentage...which tells me that that error could be eliminated or reduced and therefore is likely intentionally designed in. IMHO.

the cable driven speedo's are WAY closer then the digital version. They aren't bang on that's for sure but they aren't too bad. I think last year we determined the SRX was about 5mph out on the topend 120 radar vs. 125 on the gauge.

On one of my 98 srx's with the ripsaw the speedo was within 1 -3 kph on gps.On the other with a 1 inch track it was abour 12 high. It seems tracks do spin at high speed.

thanks, guys i figured around 8-10mph off.just wanted to know because here in ny the state has posted a 55mph speed limit on all state funded trails.i dont want to get popped for doing 55 on the speedo and actually be gooing faster,or slower.....
