Did about 40-45 miles in Allegan system today with Rambunctious. Let me say this first... trails aren't bad. A little snirty in the woods but the fields are in great shape.

Anyway, I picked up a used, low mileage clutch from a TY member last fall and this is the first time I've been able to ring it out. I'm no further ahead now than I was at the end of the season last year. It will run right up to it's 7800 rpm redline and just keep going. It shifts poorly, bogs down between 5000 and 6500 rpm and then just all the sudden shifts into high gear and heads to the stratosphere!! 7800-8000 rpm is about 70 mph tops.

Pics are of the clutch today, and of the arms and weights I took out last year. Sketch is what I remember the "newer" arms looking like. Different cam profile for sure. I have pretty good throttle response in the twisty's, but even between turns I can get past 7800 rpm. And in the fields and flats I'm having to drive with my thumb and tach. It's not really any fun when you have to watch the tach the whole time you're out!!! :o|

Advice? Should I hit the dealer for the "stock" arms like the worn ones I took out? I've not touched the secondary but SpartaSXR says it's fine.

I'm at a loss as I'm no clutch expert. Could really use some advice.

Mike

Also, half way into our ride I came out of a corner and canned it... at that moment the water temp light started flashing. so I quickly shut it down. Checked for leaks, checked the reseviour (reading full). Started it back up and got quick 5 flashes. What does this code mean? Anyone have all the codes? 1 flash = ? 2 flashes = ?? etc...

After letting it sit for a few minutes we fired it back up, got no flashes, and it never did it again.

The one in the picture is the old one... and yes it is VERY worn out. Ones that are in it now are shaped more like the sketch under the arm.

Anyone else have ANY ideas? I'd like to get this fixed asap as we have good snow here at the moment, but that can change in one day!!!

See if this helps!

Thanks.

Anyone got any clutch advice though? I just have to believe the light and clutch are in some way related... over revving, getting hot from having to keep it up in the rpm band most of the trip.. something. But I need to start with the clutch.

clutch issue

Waterfoul, What shape is your secondary clutch in? If you have gone through your primary I recommend your secondary also! Did you change your set up on primary? does your secondary match on set up? I have had both clutches wear out about the same time! Check out the cluthing setups on tech area in this site. Good luck hope this helps, Terry

You gotta give us some better information. What do you have in there now for weights, rollers, primary spring, secondary spring, and helix? Are all the bushings tight (primary cover, primary sheave, secondary helix bushing and sheave bushings)? More information you give, the more you will receive.

I think I got to the bottom of this today with the help of SpartaSXR (Pat) and the dealer. Evertything in both my clutches is stock... factory. EXCEPT for the weights/rivets I got from a TY member that were supposedly off the same sled, same year. Not sure why, but those weights/rivets show as being 500 parts and mine is a 600. Ordered the weights today and they had the correct rivets in stock... should have the new weights on Thursday, should be riding by Friday! I got the wieght part number from the tech section here on TY... very helpful. Got the rivet numbers from the Genuine Yamaha Parts link also on the tech page... matched up with what the dealer had.

Won't know till I take them out of the sled... which I will probably do either tomorrow evening or Thursday sometime. I have Thursday off work... nice!
