Spark Plug Fouling Problem

I need a little help with my 2001 SXR600. I seem to be fouling spark plugs every time I start the machine up after it's been sitting for a day or two.

It starts normally (not flooded), but soon drops from three to two cylinders. It's not always the same cylinder. Check the plugs and one or two will be wet.

Put a new plug (or two) in and away she goes. I took it for a good long ride on Saturday and thought all was well. Started it up Monday afternoon and it started to chug and run on two cylinders.

I did clean the carburators before the season started (although I'm not sure I cleaned the choke mechanism innerds???). Could it be the choke plungers getting stuck?? I did ensure that there is sufficient play in the choke cable.

Any ideas???

i think he meant make sure you don't touch the throttle until it has been running for at least 5 minutes.
 
i had a similer problem last year was that my oil cable was out of the ajuster check that i put in some b9es in or use a br9yea spark plugs
 
yea that probably isn't such a good idea. Have you ever seen what cold seizure looks like and what it does? Those lightweight alloy pistons expand a lot faster than a thick, heavy nicasilled cylinder. What happens when you push a big piston around in a small cylinder? Nothing pretty unless you are a parts supplier.
 
No offense to Uncle Larry, but it's not going to happen!!!

I adjusted my Choke cable to make sure there is adequate free play, I'm hoping that will help. A couple of you mentioned that I shouldn't touch the throttle. Should I just play with the choke until it idles steady??

yes ideally u should be able to toggle the choke upon initial start up until she hits the idle speed.......on some rare occasions i have been known to give it a touch of throttle......
just to clarify exciterfan, is it fouling plugs only when u use the choke? if so i would check to see that the choke lever at the carbs is not binding...

One of the first secrets of longevity is... Hold your horses and let your freakin engine warm up! Especially if your running WISECO pistons.
 
I have the same sled (01 sxr 600). I find I must let it warm up for several minutes before taking off. If I try to take off too soon it will back fire and foul 1 or 2 plugs. Be patient.
 
It's comforting to know that I don't have a "unique" problem!!

I was actually talking to the local Yamaha dealer today and they indicated that the SXRs tended to foul plugs if you were not careful. I called them because I'd heard through the grapevine that there might be a Tech Bulletin that called for a hotter plug. They said there was nothing on file.

Has anyopne ever tried a BR8ES instead of the stock BR9ES??? Is it worth a try? A dangerous move??

P.S. I've added some slack to my choke cable so I'll see how that worls out tomorrow!!

this is just what i'm told, take it with a grain of salt. Can someone please tell me what's wrong with this? like i said, i don't really know any better.

i know to fix that problem i leaned the machine out a lil from stock...nothin massive...went to 142.5 mains and stock needles...it helped out that problem alot... BUT there's no replacement for bein patient
