97 sx700 backfired and quit then had no spark. We changed the cdi box and the stator. Still no spark, or sometimes very weak spark. Upon pulling the motor we discovered a blue wire shorting out under the motor on the bulkhead it went to the headlight and gauges. Put the sled back together it started right up, ran for 5 seconds and quit with no spark. At this point the sled could have been purchased for $1200. Dad saw the shop light still on and decided to swing by to see whats going on. Dad's a master electrician, as my brother and his mechanic friend pulled it over looking for spark dad sniffed out the short. It was the smaller of the two plug -ins going into the cdi box. One of the pin terminals was rusted off and was making occasional contact. I havn't seen it yet but my brother said if dad hadn't smelled it you would never find it because it's corroded inside the plug. I hope this helps someone else out there, nothing sucks worse than an electrical problem!
