I am wanting to buy another sled. I have a lead on an 02 viper with low miles. My last sled was an 01 srx 700 that had some work done do it. My question is what are the main diffrences between the sleds? wich is better and wich ofcourse is faster? Is the single pipe gona make it alot slower and i think the viper is a little lighter? please help I want to make sure i will like it as much as i loved my 01 srx. Thanks in advance

srx is faster. Stock srx is gonna be faster than stock viper with triple pipes. Bone stock for bone stock srx is gonna be faster no doubt. SRX is a 3x3 stock, viper is a 3x1 stock. Viper is a little lighter I think, and more comfy stock. I think you'll miss your srx....

piped Viper vs stock Srx...!!

Excuse me "Cream", But did you say the srx Stock is faster then a PIPED viper with same amount of tuning? i heard that the viper will get beat but add a set of pipes to it , and so long srx....am i wrong? im sure if you add pipes to a viper it will beat a srx... Someone Help me out with this??

i know what your saying.. but lets say a 121 viper and 121 srx, Both stock exept the viper got some triples, and they BOTH get Traction... who would win in a lake race and 1/4 mile... im thinking the viper with do it both in the lake run and 1/4 mile... shouldn't the piped viper win??

viper vs srx........

well its like this, they both have advantages and disadvantages:

SRX: good points
A.)it gets great gas mpg with triple pipes 14-15mpg was never an issue

B.)rock solid reliability in stock form, and very, very respectable horsepower, very quiet

c.)comfy seat, awesome rail like cornering

bad points

1.) downfall- not enuff suspension when it gets nasty out

2.) a little nose heavy when flying, also heavy out back

Viper: good points

A.) makes more horsepower when triple pipes are added then a srx does, the porting is more aggressive, more compression, its a trail port srx engine to an extent

B.) has alot better suspension

C.) steers easier, better guages ,lighter overall snowmobile, 489lb viper to 533lb srx

Downfalls:

1.) gas mpg absolutely terrible with triple pipes, if your getting 9-10mpg your doing good while being safe on the jetting

2.) mono head desgin is absolute junk, and it takes srx parts to make the sled a true reliable trail sled

3.) seat on 02 was hard, doesnt corner as flat as srx from higher suspension, some complained shocks were 2 stiff

In closing, a suped up properly tuned piped viper will wax a srx, that is saying they both are set up equally, heck the viper gains 10hp(with 3x3 pipes) over the srx and its lighter too, but unless your a avid tuner the srx is really the way to go. Srx takes alot less tinkering for the "average joe", its got the "gas it up and go" thing going for it with rock solid reliablity. A slightly suped up srx (trail port and a few minor tricks)will be the same hp area as a viper with pipes, and you dont have jetting, cooling, reliability issues. I think alot of times your better to start with a 2000-02 srx and work on the long travel suspension kits and lightweight parts and then just clutch it perfect, and you have a sled hard to beat, it will do almost all of it well then. I have had a couple of each, a viper with pipes and srx's, they both do things well and they both have faults, you have to pick your own poision and then do the correct things to end up at your goal.

I have heard that a triple piped viper would beat a stock srx. I Was also wondering if it where true.I did hear this from a guy that owned a viper and a srx.

When MrViper talks about a very well tuned viper, he is not talking about some guy who gets a setup from his buddy or off the internet, he is talking about a guy who fine tunes his jetting/clutching, and sets the entire sled up for the individual sled, riding in certain conditions. For somebody looking for a trail sled, the srx would be a much smarter starting point, IMO, for the reasons stated above. A long traveled srx is a great trail sled that will hold its own on the lake with minimal tuning.

I am an auto tech and a (tinkerer) by nature. playing with the clutch and jets are not a problem.I also like the bender single pipe that saves weight and makes 4 more hp for the viper.

there are not really any srx snowmobiles around with out a ton of miles on it. This 02 viper has 1300 miles on it the guys girlfriend rode it and it is bone stock not even studs. he is asking 3400. no electric or reverse

Good post Dreamer. I was wondering about adding a Viper to my fleet but was leary of the cornering aspect since we ride mountain trails pretty hard and being able to hold a corner is a big factor for us.

Taking the SRX off trail is a little iffy sometimes as there is not much clearance under the belly - and not much suspension travel.

If you ride groomed trails I would go with the srx, why spend all the cash to make a viper as reliable as an srx? You can probably find a really nice 01-02 srx for $3000-4000, which is probably about the same as a viper before all the pricey mods. I had to make the same choice two years ago.

Is there any suspension mods for the SRX to give it a little more clearance and travel?

Yes, a long travel kit for the rear end, around $200 bucks and it can ride better than any stock proaction long travel. I have a maxx perf. long travel kit in my 01 srx, rides AWESOME

have i got a deal for you. in maine, in unclehenrys, viper handling, ride, looks and guage with srx engine, pipes, fuel milage, and seat foam. bullet proofed suspension and crome front end just because i could.
will set suspension to buyers weight.
4500$
