Something doesn't sound right. mrviper700 is saying an SRX has better mpg and better reliability than an SXViper? So why wouldn't anyone buy a SXViper with a problem engine? Just for the suspension? Did Yamaha release an "upgraded" lemon here?
He means that triple piped Viper gets worse mpg than stock triple piped SRX. + the tinkering and cooling issues.
Go with the (longtravel converted) SRX. My brother had one of those. Awesome sled, it had Öhlins all around etc.

This is all subjective and all depends on the individual, main use for the sled, and ego (LOL)! I have had a 99 SRX, 02 SRX and a very well set-up 02 viper. I recently sold my Apex GT and went back to an 02 viper with an M-10 suspension (2800 OTD). I love the pull of an SRX but, unless you do what others say and long track it or add a suspension you will get beat up in the rough stuff. The ride of a stock 02 viper was a little better but, not leaps and bounds better. For me if I could get an 01 SRX and had the money for a good after market suspension I would go that route.

How about stock for stock for mpg?

there are no high mileage srx's around, hmmmm mine has almost 10 thousand on it and a local repairshop owner has his personal one with 15 thousand on it.

You mean low mileage used srx's around?

from what I have read and heard, even with 10k on the SRX, they still are reliable and will run with proper maintenance and care. THe power valves will need to be cleaned and make sure they're not pulled when you buy one.
I like my 98 SRX and all this talk of Long tracking is making me think Hmmmm!!
Good fun to be had with what ever you choose

there was i think a 2001 srx for sale in the autotrader in ontario and it only had 560 km on it, lol if i had the money it would be in the shed at home right now. srx's with low mileage are hard to fine but every now and then you find a gem.

SRX VS Viper
I owned a 99 SRX 700 with log travel rear and flat out loved it 10,000 miles and that thing still ran hard with the best of them. Did most of my riding in the UP( Flat great trails) I now Have a Viper with only 1200 miles I stole it from a guy who needed money this summer ( I was looking for an SRX ) I know that I will miss that midrange power of the SRX but here in Maine I think I will be just as Happy with the better suspension! I think that as long as you leave any Yamaha motor alone, do minor clutching etc... They are reliable! I won't do any motor mods on my trail sleds, Been there and don't want to get stuck in no mans land! I will tell you around Jan for sure!

Mr Viper nailed it. I've owned both and like the SRX better, but I'm sure others will like the Viper better. SRX is fast stock, and although the 2000-02's got the CNC machining and dig ignition the 98's especially were just as fast, they just came with a belt sander for a track. Both sleds carry their weight well and to me the SRX felt lighter unless you were in the big nasty bumps, then the Viper felt lighter or at least more maneurable. For a 200 mile day I was more comfortable on the SRX and unless the Viper is piped and properly tuned the SRX will win in speed gas, and oil mileage.
Good luck!

Now this comment was made back in 05. Did everyone continued to have problems with the mono head design? Would I have problems even if I leave it stock?

Everyone is agreed on speed for the SRX. But gas and oil mileage worst on stock Viper? I thought it would be better than stock SRX. If you mean a moded Viper then I understand.
