My 96 Vmax 600 XT was running fine then all of a sudden lost power off the start. idles ok. slugish off the start up to about 5000 rpm then takes off. I swaped out the plugs, but not it. does this sound like a clutch problem?

How many miles? I had to replace the weights on my primary last year at 6500 miles. The weights were worn and getting hung up on the rollers.

Check the clutches for something binding or worn parts, bushings, weights, buttons, rollers.
Could also be dirty carbs.

not sure what happened to the old motor. Previous owner did it and then traded it back to the dealer. It was the dealers personal sled before that.

I'm still betting on the rollers or weights. On the primary, you can check the rollers pretty easy. Just roll them with your finger... if they roll ok without a lot of play, they are fine. Weights have to be taken out to check.

Gotta ask, now sure are you that the sled has only 1300 miles on it? Easy enough to unhook the speedo and ride it... no miles added. My sled has approx. 300 miles more than the odometer says, but I have no problem telling anyone that. Speedo key broke during a ride last season... rode 2 days with no speedo.

I know the dealer pretty well and it was the owners personal sled and he just never rode it. He sold it last year to a guy and it blew up so he traded it back in. So i am confident it only has the 1300 miles.

Just got back from the dealer (across the street from my office). One cylinder blown. Ate the rings and it needs new jug. Any idea why this motor would have roasted so fast? I was babying it too, not like i was beating it. I am worried that after he fixes it again it will do the same all over again.

lean condition on that carb? Bad head gasket? Bad oil pump? A number of things could have caused this... but those are where I'd start.

i asked the mechanic and he basically said he doesnt know what caused it. I had filled the oil tank and its about 1/2 way now so it is using oil. He is looking for a jug now so we'll see what he comes up with.

How is this thing jetted? Too lean on the pilots will melt it down while you are driving slow.
I was concerned when you said the NEW motor had 100 miles on it, Esp when the OLD motor only had 1200 miles on it.
Good to hear you got to the bottom of it quickly. There is a thread about a 600 SX that the guy has been chasing a problem like this for weeks!
But sorry it is such a costly failure. :(

my dealer is rying to find a jug and cant find one. anyone know where i can get a jug for this sled?

ps. dealer is eating the cost.

dealer found a jug and has it coming. i guess he is going to clean the carbs too. i dunno, 2 engines in 100 miles sounds fishy and i bet its going to happen again.

Make sure you get it in writting that they will stand behind their work. Twice in 100 miles and they dont know what caused it! Give it another 100 and you will be visiting them again.
