what do you think good idea or bad idea?
I use Mobil 1 synthetic and have never had a chain, bearing or gear problem. Have about 7,200 miles on my sled all of which have been hard miles through tight, twisty woods trails so this sled has definitely not been babied.

Amsoil Syn Chaincase lube here for the past 5 years or so with ZERO issues. Used Klotz before that, Used Golden Specto before that.
Any modern syn chaincase lubes are good and will work fine.

I use Shell synthetic that I get at Canadian Tire and it seems to work great,It's lighter than regular gear oil but it seems to stick well.

I use amsoil 75W90 gear lube, not the chaincase lube and have had GREAT luck with it. Very easy to detect impurities because of the color of it. Works great.

that's the exact reason i use it, much thicker, gotta make a difference when the chain is under constant load changing when you are on the brakes/gas/brakes gas. Half the chain is going into tension and compression everytime you let off and hit the brakes, then get back on it. I want something with some strong shear resistance in there, and thick to absorb the shock

gear lube for case
I use type "F" tranny fluid, never had any issues and its cheap, they run it in any late model stick shift automobile/truck trans and its fine, and gear to gear contact needs more sheer resistance then a lousy link chain does. Been using it for over 10years, easy and never ever had any problems, plus its a high detergent based oil. All the talk over sheer strength, cushion, blah, blah blah, doesnt do squat in a snowmobile chaincase. Anytime you can run a synthetic base oil over a petroleum based your upgrading, so yes, synthetic oil is better by a landslide over old fashioned gear lube, and it doenst stink half as bad when you change it....lol
synthetic oil change over is more important in the 2 stroke oil you run, over the chaincase oil!! Now if we could only get alot of you guys to run amsoil, klotz, etc real synthetic oil instead of 20 year old technology yamalube, youd all have engines lasting longer with reduced wear.
The powervalve issue is not from just oil brand, it has alot to do with the way you ride the sled, if you putt putt all day long I dont care what oil you have, its gonna build up. Thats why you hear the term" just cleaning the cobwebbs out of it".....LOL
