A little help please... Clutches... again
I re-worded the title of this thread... sorry if it sounded a little harsh before, but I was a bit miffed at the time.
So I know I have the wrong weights in my sled... rebuilt with free parts but still over revs badly. So I research it to death! I know I need the 8DFOC wieghts... but of course Yamaha uses the same part number for all the weights... just uses these stamped numbers to differentiat them. See the attached pic. The ones I put in last season show for a 600 so I'm not sure what's going on. The ones I just put in, from the dealer, are the same friggen wieghts I just took out!!!! What the he!! I just can't deal with this anymore... I told the parts guy specificaly: 8DFOC I never looked at the part numbers on the new wieghts... just pounded the rivets in and started replacing them. Then I notice the difference (or lack there of I should say) between the ones coming out and the ones going in. Two pics below... I need the ones circled in blue... even showed the dealer. Got the ones in red, which are the same as the ones I took out!
Second pic shows the old, worn out one on top... the ones I just took out (same as the ones I just friggen put in!) on the bottom. See the difference in profiles??
Only difference between what I took out and what I just put in... the ones I just put in are weighted differently than the ones I took out... 17 on the end, 13 in the middle. The ones I just took out appear to be 13 and 13 (or thereabouts). Could this work? Heavier at the end?

The 8cr,s don,t have enuff inner mass for a high hp sled unless you run a lot of helix. What sled are you trying to run the 8cr weights in what primary spring; elevation; secondary set-up??????? Need a ton more info!

97 600 XT totally stock as far as I know. Primary has no paint mark on the spring.. but it is a black spring. Secondary has a red paint mark on the spring. Running in Michigan... where the elevation doesn't vary enough to matter. And I'm trying to NOT run the 8CR's.... but it seems to be what I keep getting handed to me!
What gets me is I ASKED for the specific parts I know worked when I bought the sled. What I got was something different and now I'm probably stuck with $81 worth of clutch weights and a sled that still isn't right.

So what weights are you trying to get to works. You have the proper secondary spring & it should be at 3&3=60 degree wrap. The 8cr,s should be 17.2 inner & a 10.3 steel outer with a w-s-w primary spring.

I tried to put the screen print of the clutch for my machine up here but I can't seem to get small enought download and still be readable.
Part listed for the 600 is the 8CR... so why did I pull out the 8DF from a sled that is supposed to be stock and worked fine?
Problem is Turk, everything you just printed might as well be written in Greek as I don't understand any of it. I know how these clutches work, but I don't have any idea what you are talking about. I am just trying to put it back the way it was last season, when it worked just fine until the weights and rollers went bad. Last year: 8DF with larger weight in the end, smaller weight inner (looks the same as the ones I just pounded into the 8CR's). I got some free parts to fix it last season... they didn't fix anything. These were 8CR's with the same weight in both holes. I just put in a different set of 8CR's with a 17.? outer and a 13.3 inner... at the dealers recomendation.

The weights on the paper plate look to be different to me. The top newer looking one looks like the one circled in blue. The newer looking one has more mass by the pivot than the dirty ones. They are close but different weights. Maxdlx

Top one... 8DF (were in the sled when I bought it and it ran fine till they wore out). Appear to be 17 and 13 rivets.
Bottom (dirty) ones are the ones I got for free, supposed to be the ones for my sled (came out of the same year, model, and cc sled as mine). Don't work. Sled over revs easily. Appear to be ~13 rivets
What I put in: Another set of 8CR's (more by mistake than anything) with different rivets than the 8CR's I took out. 17 and 13.3 rivets
Unfortunatly there is NO snow left here... so even if I button the whole thing back together to see if the different rivet weights make a difference, I can't try it out.

Looking into it more:
Rivets I put in were: 17.2mm 4.5g and 13.3mm 3.1 g (again, at the dealers recomendation and from the diagram of my primary sheave)

wieghts dont wear out the bushings in them do and can be replaced.if you held your wieghts up to the ones shown on the page you can check profiles or for any bending but i dont think that is the case.if the rollers had siezed at some time there would be little ramps inbeded on the tops but could be filed out.somebody correct me if i am wrong?
I have seen yammie twins destroy the top of primary weights if the clutch ain,t properly maintained.

This is what appears to have happened. The weights I took out last year are shot trust me. There are actually grooves worn in the weights.
so does anyone think it's worth trying the combo I have put in? 8CR's with 17.2 on the end and 13.3 inner?
waterfoul,
i dont know why but the 97 vmax 500 xt and xtc come with 8ab weights and the 600 come with those 8cr weights your talking about. the 8ab weights run very good. i would try a set of those and it should solve all your problems. check your rollers to see if they are still good.

Rollers are good.
Thing is, I'm not made of money, and I've now spent $81 on these friggen weights and as it appears, they are not going to work. I really just don't have another $81 to throw at this thing right now.

What is the part # on those weights. They should be able to made to work.

Turk, see the pic in post 1. Circled in red is what I have in now (new parts). Cirlced in blue are the ones I took out that worked before they wore out (adn what I THOUGHT I ordered).

Bump to the top.
Does anyone think these weights will work?

Try changing inner to a 4.5 gram also. Yhose weights will work but it will take a few attempts at tuning.

how do you get the old weights out once they are pounded in?
Drill em 2/3 thru & then pound em out with a hammer & punch.

So you think if I take out the smaller weight and put in another larger one I might be o.k.?
What will this do to throttle response? Shift points?
