Pulling my carbs today, I noticed that there was quite a bit of oil wash in my airbox. I suspect this is somewhat normal but just wondering if someone could explain exactly how or why it does this? My guess is some sort of blow back from the carbs.

Just curious,

I think it is a combination of things, including blowback. As you may have noticed, there is no filter to the airbox, just baffles, so anything sucked into the inlet goes into the airbox, but the baffles deflect these particles, and act somewhat as a filter.

Now, the air inside a sled cab isnt always the cleanest, especially on other brands other that yamaha!!, but what little crud goes in there will stick to the blowback and eventually build up. I Clean it everytime my carbs come off, but the oil can be considered to be normal.

yep, i wash all that crud out everytime i have it off and i even wash the foam filter on top with hot soapy water in the sink.... now that thing gets dirty!!!

Riding habits

I think it has alot to due with riding habits. The air box on my machine has always had oil in it, The wife machine has always been spotless. Both 600 Twins. Being On and off the throttle more often/harder will cause more spit back.
