just bought one, anyone know of any issues wiyh this model, recalls, and ideas for slightly modifiyng,i am putting on a 2up seat, can i just extend the tunnel with some sheet metal so the seat does not hang over or is there more to it,thanks
the 97 600 twins had an issue where the ring locating pin would come out of the piston and allow the ring to spin on the piston catching a port on the cylinder. Ask the guy you got it from if this has been updated with 98 or newer pistons.

My '97 xtc 600 has 3300 trouble free miles. I did get a pinhole in the exhaust in 2002, but what was odd was that it was not rusty at all. No biggie, just an arc strike from a welder and it was fixed. It injects a little more oil than it should imo, and has a slight "burble" at partial throttle openings, but this is nothing I can't live with. It has been one of the best sleds I have ever owned.

I don't think you have to do anything to the tunnel the seat doesen't hang over

Siudog, there might have been a update on the fuelpump. Maybe one from a 99 mm 600 would do the trick? Just thinking..

dfunkdf-thanks thats what i wanted to hear,i put a 2up on our spare polaris(its a spare) and the seat hangs over the back bumper,so if i can do it to my sled with no modifications that would be awsome, and thanks guys for all the info,i gotta go and investigate if any of these upgrades were done to my sled, thanks

You couldn't possibly have known this but he bought the seat off my Venture , so it WILL hang over without an extension. It was posted as such in my Clasified ad.
The extension itself is: http://216.37.204.202/yamaha_oem/YamahaSnow.asp?Type=13&A=198&B=18
item #2 and that is Ronnies price. Somebody here is parting out a 700 venture, 99 I think, they may have the extension for you. Items 89&90 are included with the seat you bought off me.
Someone else here may have another alternative.
PIston update is a must. The spindle recall will be by your VIN #. Junk the steel skis and get plastic. I have GYT all purpose on mine with Bergstrom Triple 6" carbides. Peel 1 layer out of the headgasket and use Turk's clutch setup from the tech page. I also revalved and resprung my rear shocks. They are also hard on primary clutch components. Check it for wear . Oil pump was also an issue. There was a recall on them. Again, check with your dealer with VIN # in hand. I have 6500 {more or less} on mine and it has NEVER left me stranded. Even when it ate a piston!! Rode it 35 miles back to the cabin on 1 cylinder. If you look at my avatar, thats me launching my ER and mirror eqipped XTC. Not the quickest, fastest, but a great handling sled. I also replaced the track with a 1" Camoplast. Also a very good investment. Hard to part with it, cause the value for them is LOW!! Do these few easy mods and you can run with a lot of faster sleds.

Yamaha did/does make a two-up seat for the 121" sleds. It is/was available in the accessory cataloge(sp). That's probably what he has.
Here's a pic of a tunnel extension from Maxximum performance.

The extension itself looks fairly simple.
