Too many rpms for my 700?

Application:

2002 700 MM...stock. 700 miles

Ran it today around Grand Lake, CO (9000 -11000 ft). I am working on the clutch for another sled, so I have been doing a lot of reading/research and was really paying attention to the sled today. I noticed that she sits right at 8800 RPMS and pulls strong. I have a 600mm that beats it in top speed every time. My question is...do you think that is too many RPMs for the 700? If so, what should I do with the clutching to drop it down? Where should I be running? Thanks...
 
I Had an 02 mountain max 700 and it usually pulled about 8800 with the stock clutching, i usually ran it around 7000-9000 but sometimes higher and it never went over that, i would say that it is ok right where it is at

I just had my new to me '02 700 MM (reed stopper notch) out on a lake with my '97 600 MM (first stage head gasket, silencer mod (i think) and the 600 had more top end (158 km/hr) and seemed to pull a lot stronger on the top end as well. I've thought of my 600 as a bit of a rocket, but I'm a little surprised the 700 didn't eat it up hands down. I'm looking for tips on getting the 700 set up as well as my 600.

However, in the looks department, its hard to beat that blue.
 
Yep, both my 600s are about 10mph faster than the 700. I get 90 out of them at 8500 ft. The 700 is way quicker off the line and pulls away up till about 50 or 60...then the 600s really wake up and fly by...

The 700 just seems to run out of steam. That was the reason for my posting, I was wondering if I could clutch it down a bit if there was more torque at maybe 8200-8500 rpms.
 
There are some engine mods for a 700 that duplicate the way the 600 is built. The 600 cylinder has a 3/4 inch wide notch cut in the skirt. Seems to me that a 700, with the changes similar to a 600, pipes, V force reeds and spacers came off the dyno at 147 hp. All this from memory, it was a while ago. Maybe there is a tech page on it or someone knows the details.
 
Put some heavier rivets in the outer holes. Most mm's I've seen like to run the best at 8250-8400 rpms. I used to keep mine at no more than 8200 with PI enddumps V-Force II reeds and 18-42 gearing and was tough to beat it except on a long straight, Ken.
 
Two Words: gear ratio.

97 600 MM (unless changed for 2" track) has 9 tooth drivers and 22/39 gearing vs 2002 8 tooth and 21/40 gearing. That's why the 02 gets there faster but tops out and 600 gets it up high. I bet the 02 700 maintains rpm better in deep stuff too.
 
Change gearing?

Do you think I could go to a 22/40 gearing with the same 70L chain? What are your thoughts on that modification? I have more than enough power right now (I can't believe I just said that!). I am wondering if I added the rivets to the end of the stock clutch weights and then changed the gearing...I might be able to managed the rpms to be just a little lower and give myself some more top end.
 
I'm with give me a boost. Your RPM's are to high. 8400 is target RPM, this keeps at the top of the powerband. When I bought my 02' 7MM, it had the same RPM's as yours. Added 4.5 to the tip, which brought it right down to where it was supposed to be. Soc

Sweet Sockeyerun...hey, did you get a bit more top end speed out of it? Loose any low end power? I am thinking I may try this first before changing gears.
 
In the top end I would say probably yes. These motors in the stock form are set up to run at around 8300-8400 because thats where most power is generated. If you start adding goodies it might go up a bit. I would start by adding the weight and go from there.
 
How about a 600 triple?

Ok...I think I am good to go on the 700...does anyone know what the optimum RPMs are for a 2000 MM600 triple? It is running 9000rpms at 9000 ft. If that is too high, what do you recommend as a change to the clutch?

adding to the tip will not affect the low end...the tip is for top end pull...try puting a 51/45 helix and a silver sec spring @ 70 or 80 deg and gear it at 2.2-1 and enjoy...02
