Just finished the clutching and carbs in my SXR and was going for a ride with my son. I was just about to punch to pass his MXZ600 when I heard that awful sound of my chain breaking.
I slowed to a stop and had to get towed home by an MXZ!!! Upon inspection, it became clear that the entire chain case grenaded.
When I changed my track this fall, I discovered that the main bolt holding the lower gear in the chain case was out, had poked a hole in the chaincase cover. The previous owner had just changed the gearing before I bought the sled near the end of last season, and I guess they didn't tighten everything properly. I had the cover welded up and inspected the gears and chain. I didn't see anything wrong so I reinstalled the old chain.
Off to Yamaha to but a new chain, seals, and lower gear. I found a used chain case and cover, new bearings (NTN) and about 2 hours of work and I'm good to go. Other than the E-brake, the whole job was quite pleasant.
When that little voice tells you that you should replace something, LISTEN!!
Hope everone had a Merry Christmas and that you have a safe New Year.
Cheers,
