96 VX600 - the tach goes right to 9000 when you start the sled. It stays at 9000 at idle. If you rev the motor, it moves up a little, but just kind of swims around 9K.
I unplugged the tach lead right under the dash - tach drops to zero. plug it back in, goes right back to 9K.
The plug only fits one way: can't plug it in "backwards".
Any ideas?
Thx.

Where does the tack pick up the signal? Could also be a bad sensor or some kind. I'm real familiar with carb boat motors and picking up tach signals... but these stator style 2 strokes are pretty greek to me. Just how does it pick up the rpm signal?
