So i'm going to sell my 99 SRX600. I want to find something a bit cheaper, lighter, and with more suspension. I'm open to all brands... I like yamaha, but it's not the only sled i'm willing to buy.

So your next question is going to be, what kind of riding do you do?

I only ride like 600 miles each winter, and a lot of it is on a lake... screwing around, making jumps, trying to find deeper powder. I'd say i do probably 300 miles of packed trail riding as well.

Obviously, the SRX isn't set up at all for the kind of riding i like to do, it's fast as hell, but since the people i ride with all have 500's... there's really no contest in racing them.

I'd be looking to spend less than $1500 (I'm willing to wait till spring to find a deal), as i want to save some of the money from the SRX for other things.

What would you get?

Yeah, but the SRX is king of 100mph runs, not so much king of launching off of ramps...

And since i'm looking to save some money by getting a cheaper sled, i'm not willing to long travel it.

don't know the MA market, but don't expect to save much money at all. anything much cheaper than 1500 (probably won't get much more than that for the srx) will likly be a real piece of crap. I thought my srx rode better than my 94 ZR580. any sled will need its shocks redone, so just get your shocks redone, and ride a sled you can trust to bring you home. if you can find a sxr maybe go for it, stay away from yami twins in general, save the phazer, I don't realy think you want to go from the fastest to the slowest.

stick to a sled with good rebuildable shocks, most twins of all brands in your price range may need a new clutch

for that little of money, you wont find a sled that you can really count on to take jumps. you already know the srx and know if you can depend on it. a better jump sled would be a late model zr, firecat or mxz. none of which will be 1500 :( I would stay with what you have till you can afford a few grand, what do your friends ride for sleds?

The sleds i regulary ride with are a couple of early 90's indy 500s... one 99 xc700... and a skidoo formula 583, none of which are really any competition race-wise (aside from the 700... but after 85 or so, i walk away from it). I've seen a couple MXZ's for around $1500, and i'm sure i could find one in the spring for that price.

The SRX hasn't exactly been the most reliable sled for me, i've been struggling with hard starting issues since day one, and it seems like once i get one thing figured out, another pops up.

long travel it for a few hundred youll still have the fastest 600 and will have have fun being able to ditch bang

Trade in is $2000, retail is $3000... Trying to save up for a business, so saving any money is a plus right now.

Not trying to rag on your sled but you're never gonna get $3000 unless it's super cherry with super low miles and has accessories. '01 SRX's are barely pulling $3K. I'd keep it and spend more time on here talking with people than can help you fix the problems. As for the hard starting... where's your idle set? If you're up in the 1600-1800 range, try backing it down a little and see if that helps.

I understand i'll never get $3000... It's retail value. I was just pointing out that I can save around $500 by getting a cheaper sled, which, to me right now, is a substantial amount of money.

I've read and posted a lot about my hard starting issues... I'll be spending tommorrow working on getting it running. I wish i could tell you what my idle was set at, but i haven't been able to get it to start in a month.

You've tried all the little tricks to get it started? A little gas in one cylinder (works for me in the spring... I have one shoulder that gives me trouble if I pull too much on the cord so I cheat if I have to!!)? Try not to use starting fluid (not good for 2 strokes) if possible. Is the choke engaging all the way? I've seen sleds that just didn't fully choke even when the choke lever was in the full choke position. You could just turn the idle down a little as it sits and give that a try... mark your starting position so you have a baseline to go back to. If that doesn't work try turning it up a little.... check the spark too while you're at it.

As for jumping and such.... I agree with most above... long travel the sled you have for a couple hundred $ and be done with it. Jumping is really hard on a sled... and an older, cheaper one will only have the same issues you would have if you simply kept the one you have. I'll bet there are people here on TY with the parts you need for less $$ than it would cost you to buy parts at the dealer or even off ebay. There are good people here... who WANT to help others ride their YAMAHA'S. :D

if your trying to start a business i would sell the sled outright and walk away with the cash. i mean if your running your own business, let alone just starting off, i would not have any "poor" investments if you know what i mean. having a $2,500 machine sitting around would not be a wise choice. if you sell off all the things you don't need, and are more pragmatic oriented, you will be able to reap the benefits later on as your business grows and prospers. heck, you could buy back a srx with low miles, as well as a "lighter and higher" sled that you speak of. just my .02

Tough call. You would really need every $ possible for the business, but snowmobiling cant be just given up

Id stick with the sled, just the way it is. You can make due with it the way it is now most likely, and if you need the extra travel, you could either get that long travel kit or find a used rear suspension and front shocks from a V-max or newer SXR.

is the srx paid for?

Yeah, i own it... It's going to the dealer this week to get fixed... i think it has a bad stator, i have no spark at all, and i've chased just about every other avenue i could. I've spent about 15 minutes riding this sled this winter, and over 15 hours trying to get it started again.

I won't have to give up snowmobiling all-together. I'm going to sell the SRX and buy something cheap and reliable (and easy to work on). I spent this weekend riding my 13 year old brother's 92 indy 500 and it's a blast. I'll be back on a yamaha in a couple of years... trust me.

if it is paid for, there isnt any way to be cheaper. yo uknow the sled. might get lucky, might not. always a risk buying an old used sled

If you need the money to start your business...sell it dont look back. Give your business some time to get started. Then when it does, buy a newer sled.

Just experience talking here!

Well, thanks for all the advice guys. The sled is at the dealer getting fixed right now, and will be for sale as soon as i get it back.
