Can I take a link out of my chain?

I went with a smaller gear in my MM and now my stock 70 link chain is too loose. I thought no problem I'll just break the chain and take a link out of it. All three of the shops I called said it couldn't be done. I was just curious if anyone has done this and if not why wouldn't it work. I ended up buying a 68 link chain.

wont work chains are cheep enough. think i paid 40 for mine. go to a shop where they ahve a parts unlimited catalog they ahve a chain that will fit and its usaly alot cheeper then a yamie chain.

I've done it before but was in a pinch and wouldn't recommend it. The cost of a new chain is much less than the cost of the chain, chaincase, and chaincase cover (all of which may have to be replaced after a chain failure).
