new primary spring

Just installed a new primary spring today after running the previous one for two seasons. When I first got on the sled, I noticed the engagement was slightly higher than with the old spring. They are the EXACT same brand and color springs. Does this say something for the old one, like perhaps it was shot and needed to be replaced? I also added more weight to the mid hole on my Heavy Hitters while I had the clutch apart. If anything, I would have thought the engagement would have dropped.
 
The sprung height of the spring was probably a little taller with the new spring, with a taller height it will engage higher, kinda like adding engagment shims.

That is normal, With your new spring your engagement will be higher (than a worn spring) and you total shift more than likely will be higher as well.
 
The old primary spring must have been sacked out because with the new one in there it runs noticably better. More top end is the main thing I noticed.
 
jwifferdill, what gearing do you have on your sled, and lug height? whats your top end?

23/37 gearing, 1 inch full block Camoplast track. Top end last night across the lake with about 5 inches of snow, kind of packed down...105mph and climbing a bit. That is a speedo reading, however. On hardpacked trails and roads it buries the speedometer.
