The sled runs fine but if you are at an idle and hold the brake on and put on your high beam the voltage drops enough that the tach will restart. I have ohms tested the staor and it is ok. The no load voltage at idle is 14 volts. When all the accesories are on and the high beams are switched on the voltage drops to 3 volts. There are no added on accesories and the stock headlights are still used. There are no breaks or wear marks in the harness.
 
main wiring harness is rubbed through under the engine and is shorting out, causing your voltage drop. Very common. Unplug the harness from everything on the hood, tie a string to it, and pull it out and repair the damaged wires and wrap with tape (individually) and wireloom the harness. Pull the string to pull the harness back through and hook it back up and you should be good to go.
 
I have pulled the harness out from under the motr and there is no spots that have rubbed through. If the harness had rubbed through and was causing a short I think that I would beb having issues with blowing bulbs
 
wouldn't neccesarily blow bulbs-- when you check the harness where it goes under the motor, make sure you follow it behind the motor too, where it comes up under the carb on the pull start side- that's where mine rubbed through
 
ok, have you checked the voltage at the stator plug (3 white wires)with it running with all the stuff on? I also would be curious as to what it reads for voltage at the voltage regulator, before and after?
 
The voltage before the regulator is 14 20 volts ac after the regulator its 14 volts.
There are no breaks or rubbed through spots in the harness. The harness is 100% OK.
 
so whats the voltage then at the 3 wire white stator plug with sled running and all the stuff on?
 
Im confused here then, so where did you get your reading of 3 volts then with everything turned on? are you rechecking this stuff or going off of your memory from before?

Its dc current in a sled, ac is house current. On a digtial voltmeter, set the scale to "V" 20k

recheck the 3 wire plug with sled idling, high beam on and have someone hold the brake on or use a ziptie to hold the brake leverto the handlebarn, stick your red probe in the plug and black to ground on frame and see what it reads, whats the voltage??

do the same check at the voltage regulator, before the regulator and after, whats the voltage???

if this all is ok, then next go to the high/low beam switch, check the voltage on the blue wire with white tracer, whats the voltage???

lastly unplug the tail light harness by the front of seat, under front of seat and check and see if the voltage after the regulator is 14 still
 
I have rechecked my readings. The voltage would drop from 14 volts to 3 volts when the high beam was switched on. This was measured at the output side of regulator. The Voltage would drop and then come back up but to only 10 volts imediatley.

As for a sled being DC, it is , but only after the regulator/rectifier. Measuring at the 3 pin stator conector is still AC.

After your replies I have to almost wonder if the stator is bad. Even though it tests OK staticly. It could be shorting internally under high load.
