This is the second one I've seen this happen on. The round head screws that secure the ring gear to the starter are threaded all the way to the head and when the heat from the belt gets the sheeves hot melts the loctite and these screws start loosening up. With nothing but threads at the shoulder of those screws every time the starter motor engages more metal is lost and eventually you hear the ring gear start clanking around. I've got one ring gear with all the holes oblonged out and another with 4 out of six oblonged. I was wondering if anyone ever just rotated it and redrilled 6 new holes or is there not enough metal in between the ported holes to do this. The only other option I can see is to fill with weld and redrill the original holes. I don't want to spend $197 for new ones at the stealer that's for sure.

Try using Loctite "648"; it's what Yamaha suggests. It's higher strength and it has a higher melting point.

Greg is that 648 loctite different than loctite red? Can you get it at a Napa?

Yes, it is different. In Canada, I had a hard time getting it. I went to a Loctite distributor and had to wait a week for them to get it in. My local dealer also said that this Loctite should be used on the primary clutch spider to fixed sheath. I was told that it's stronger and has a much higher melting point than the regular red loctite (262).

Sniperboy, that was a recall at one time, they changed something and I think the replacement gear is a diffentcolr or something the original one is gold and the new one that black green color or something to that effect. The loctite they want you to use is the dark green super loctite, if the gear is OK I should have back sheaves on the shelf give me a call.

Thanks for the help guys, the sheave is still ok, and the ring gear is black steel. I'll just take it to my friend and have him weld fill the holes and redrill it. I've been wanting to take a welding class and get some equipment for my garage workshop. Now that I'm parting sleds and need to get a lot of stuff welded lately I think I'll look into it.
