Viper 700 Bearing Problem

I bought an '02 Viper ER from a reputable dealer last January with 2700 miles on it. Ran great, compression awesome, great shape. Ran it all year last year and put on about 400 miles (not great snow conditions). Put it into storage by the book, drained carbs, fogged, etc. Put it back into service this winter and first trip out less than 2 miles...SEIZED! Thought it was a piston, no big deal. Took it back to the dealer and find its the center bearing that busted and seized, pistons are fine. He also mentioned that all 4 bearings should be replaced, and while your at might as well replace the pistons. Only $1100...

My question. Is this acceptable to have worn bearings on this triple at 3100 miles? Seems too low to me. Thoughts, comments? Will Yamaha pony up anything? Thanks

iT IS NOT NORMAL FOR ONE OF THESE MOTORS TO HAVE A FAILURE LIKE THAT, THRY USUALLY GO FOR 1000'S OF MILES. MAY BE IT WAS A LUBE PROBLEM OR SOME HOW EVEN THOUGH YOU FOGGED IT THE BEARING GOT RUST ON IT. tHIS SOUNDS LIKE WHAT YOU HEAR ABOUT EARLY IN THE SEASON ON GUYS 1ST RIDE OUT THE MOTOR SEIZES OR COMES APART. iF THERE IS RUST ON THESE BEARINGS THEY WILL SELF DESTRUCT ONCE THE MOTOR IS RUNNING. MAKE SURE WHO EVER FIXES IT VERIFIES THE OIL SYSTEM WORKS. GOOD LUCK.
 
I'd check specs on them pistons before i would replace them, they got to be good yet..... unless like stealth said it was an oiling prob.

Those things just don't use enough oil, when you fix it turn the oil pump cable up, as well as have them check the checkvalve going to the fuel pump, if that is bad it will put oil in your oil tank rather than oil, I have a crank for sale if you need it. I just did a Viper motor and it looked terrible inside, like it was run low on oil, the check valve was bad.
 
Thanks to all for the comments, suggestions. The shop says that the other bearings may still be okay, so it might only be the gernaded one that gets replaced. The pistons are showing a bit more play than they should have, so they just warned me that the sleeve may break and cause cylinder problems. I will definitely consider cranking up the oil injection.

Boy...i wonder if you shouldn't throw new pistons in her, that would suck
500 miles down the road and she goes down on ya.

Just wanted to let you know I have the same sled that I have left stock . The current mileage is 16,000 miles plus and still going . Don,t get discouraged it's still going to be an awsome sled . Fix it and ride it , Yamaha always gets me home .... Good Luck

Wow...thats pretty good 02, what kida oil has the sled seen.
 
Moisture/water is the big killer on bottom end's. When the crank pin starts to rust, the needle bearing's wont roll correctly. Once a needle hangs and starts to slide, she's all over and it gets real expensive real quick.
One of the key things to remember, if you start the motor and it's going to be sitting for awhile. Warm the motor ALL the way up to operating temp. This will help remove moisture from the combustion process.
