Rivet Removal

Thoughts on rivet removal? Just drill the centers out and pry?

I am by no means a mechanic, but failry decent at tearing stuff apart. Want to take a few things out (using other than brute force) and replace; simple stuff like a snow flap, grill inserts, etc.

Yup use a drill. They don't usually come out that hard. Just make sure you don't "enlarge" the original hole.

depending on the rivets, but when i know i dismantled a srx i took a punch and tapped out the center steel rod in the rivet and then drilled the aluminum part. works a lot easier than trying to drill it with it in there. maybe someone has something better, i dunoo...

If you do happen to enlarge a few holes, you can use some of the drilled out rivet heads as back-up washers with the new rivet.

A small point tip bit in an air chisel works great to drive the centers out before you drill. Makes the job much faster if you have a bunch to do.

If you are going to drill them out, it often helps if you can get a hold of the backside of it with a needlenose vice grip or similar to keep it from spinning

CAREFULLY grind one end off(flush)and just pop out.

Drill em...I think it's a 3/16.

First use a center punch as a starter so the drill bit doesn't walk on you. The drill bit size is 3/16 as stated by coreysask. Drill out enough of the rivit so as not to remove any material from the weight itself. Then take a large punch and knock the remaining rivet part out. Just make sure you fasten the weight so it won't turn on you when drilling.
