Just got back from our first trip of the season to Grand Marais. My weekend lasted exactly one night and about 60 miles... the last 2 of which were at the end of a tow rope in the dark. Lost the clutch side piston... scrored up the cylinder wall but good. I'll post pics tomorrow.
So, I need a decent jug and piston if anyone has any laying around.
Are there any exchange programs on these jugs? I'm sure mine can be fixed but I really want to sled again next weekend...
Also, where did the metal that was scored off the wall go? Is it necessary to tear it down to the crank or did it go out the exhaust? I have to believe some made it into the crank case? Are the crank bearings robust enough to survive nickacelled aluminum shavings??
If anyone can help I'd appreciate it. I sure got bored sitting around the cabin for two days while the others rode. Watched Caddy Shack 3 times!! Wanna here some of the lines???

mike,
i think millineum has a cylinder exchange program. give them a call and tell them what you need. perhaps they may even be able to hook you up with a piston. i dont know the link to their web site but mrviper does.

Well several of the guys I ride with are bonafied sled heads. We have two guess so far:
One, I pushed this little 600 just a little too hard trying to keep up with them... they ride a new 700 Pro-X, SRX, 3 Doo 800's and a brandy new Attack. I kept up with them for 60 miles.
Other guess is that a ring broke... and probably not this weekend since one of the guys said he thought my sled sounded "funny" from the get go... and when I last rode it (early December) it seemed down on power and sounded a little off to me as well... which I attributed to the poor clutching and that I hadn't ridden it since last year.
We did a short ride Friday afternoon... about 25 miles and I was not happy with my clutching so Rambunctious and I took the helix off to discover it was set at 70*. Stock setting for my sled is 60*. We changed it and the sled came to life!! What a difference. But it still seemed a little down from last year. We figured we'd take another short ride after 4 more of our buddies showed up around dinner.... and we like to ride at night. Let me tell you it's DARK on the side of the trail when you're sled quits and you forgot to pack your flashlight!! When they finally realized I wasn't there they came back and we towed it home. 50 psi compression on the clutch side, 120+ on the other. Tore the head off to find the cylinder scratched up pretty good. So, I stayed at the cabin with the dogs and a pile of DVD's for the next 2 days.

Yeah, this sled had the piston update done.
Still need a jug and piston... but I don't have a lot of money. I'm sure this is where my issues will be.... $$

Dealer!
Found one online for $334.
I just got off the phone with Slicks Salvage in Mason, MI. My girlfriends brother is one of the backers for this yard... freind of the owner kind of thing... $250 with exchange. We're getting closer, but I'd sure like to find a decent used one for less than that. Still have to buy a piston, rings, gaskets, do I also need a new pin?

you can get one much cheaper than that on here. probably less than half that price. i parted out a 1980 srx and let my cylinders go for $75 a piece.

Cylinder from Millenium, $199
Gasket set and piston from Dennis Kirk, 110 total
So, I'm out 309 bucks for this. Oh well.
