Switched pipes then blew up?? Related?

I switched from my aftermarket pipe to PSI to a stock one and blew up the PTO side. The piston was melted pretty good but the other one looks pretty good. It ran for a little(~30 min) while somewhat wierd but then realized that I was in trouble too late. The fan belt was off of the main drive pulley when I started investigating the problem. Not sure when this came off causing all of my problems or at the end!?!

The PSI pipe was on the machine originally from when I bought it last year. Then I found a used stock one to avoid the tickets in WI when I make trips up there. Not sure about other preformance mods(jetting etc) at this point. Will check out as it is taken apart.

Assuming that the belt was ok when I first started could the muffler change caused the problem solely?

The belt being off does not sound normal. When you changed the exhaust, you would have had the air intake shroud off. Did you drop a screw or anything that would have went into the housing and then jumped the belt off? Are all the screws in place now? There are steel bushings in the shroud screw holes that can fall out. Did the motor seem to turn over hard when it was first started? Check to see if there is something laying in the bottom of the housing. I would not reuse the belt, even if it looks okay.
 
No all the bolts from the shroud were in the proper locations when the shourd was removed to pull the engine apart for diagnosis.

I am pretty sure that I remember seeing the belt look ok when I made the initial swap. Haven't gotten to pull off the starter yet to look at that end. I can't say that I confirmed the belt working after I put the shroud back. :o|

It did take a couple of extra pulls to get it started but I hadn't run it in over a month. Also the other weird thing was once I stopped before the blowup. It wouldn't shut off with either the kill switch or key.

So my main concern is once I get her rebuilt should I put the stocker back on? I would assume there might be some jetting changes on it. So that might get put back to stock as well. It is a little faster than my buddies PII but I'd prefer reliablilty.

It may be that the belt jumped off if the motor seized very quickly, but it seems a little strange to me that it would happen. It's a short belt and the fan is not very heavy and does not have a lot of inertia. Check the pulleys for anything loose or a bad fan shaft bearing. Check and see what size jets are in the carbs now. I think the standard size is on the belt gaurd decal.
 
It was on the exhaust side. Basically everything on the exhaust side of the piston above the top ring was melted. So she was running pretty darn hot.

The fan still spins pretty freely but still need more investigation once I figure out what I am doing to fix/replace the cylinder.
 
Usually when it's the exh. side that means she's running LEAN,,,did you
ever look at the plugs see how they were burning before she burnt down??
 
Unfortunatly I did not check them before the meltdown.
So that will be a something to check before we put everything back together.
 
Ok. we cleaned up the carbs yesterday. It is jetted to 147.5. It also has aftermarket reeds(no markings put plastic and no metal guards). The carbs looked real clean only one of the pilot jets has some very minimal gunk in it. As far as I can determine the cylinders and pistons are stock components.

Our current theory is that the fan belt came off of the main drive pulley. However we don't have any evidence to confirm this. :o|

Will putting the stock exhaust back on cause any problems? This will be just when I am make trips to WI. My buddy also has a phazer and they are pretty close but mine does sound louder.

Now for the fun part any tips on taking off the airbox? Looking at replacing the fuel lines since we have her torn apart.

Back up and running now. Did find a rock in the starter cup / main fan drive pulley area. So we are assuming this is what caused the belt to come off.

Now if it would only snow!!!
 
my 6yr old son said his sounded funny so we got on my sled and rode out to his,
( he stoped and walked back to the shop @ 200 yards) found a stick was in there and knocked the belt off, I was really proud he stopped the sled for the second time, the first time I found one of the spark plugs came out. I think he starting to think he needs to do his own service instead of his dad lol.
