Does anybody have the specs and procedures for setting up the timing
on the 1982 SS440.

I went thru the motor on my 82 SS about 4 years ago. There is spot on the motor cover where you can see the timing mark on the flywheel. I used a timing light connected to a 12 volt battery and the plug clamp connected the mag side plug wire. I remenber there only being one set of marks to line up.
If you have to set it you have to go thur the flywheel holes and move the plate that hold the internal coils.
I believe the spec was 10' BTDC.

Thanks for the info. I am trying to set it up before the motor goes in the
sled so I need the method with a dial indicator.

I believe mine had a stake mark in the coil plate that i was able to reference to the case when i but it back together and it was right in the money when checked with the timing light.
BUT if the case and/or the plate was replaced...........?

This is the procedure as it is written in my service manual. I also have a 1982 ss440.
1. Remove the fan case cap.
2. Remove the right side spark plug and screw dial guage stand into spark plug hole.
3. Insert dial guage with needle into stand.
4. Rotate magneto flywheel until piston is a T.D.C. Set the zero on dial guage face to line up exactly with the dial guage needle. Tighten set screw on dial guage stand to secure dial guage assembly. Rotate flywheel back and forth to be sure that indicator needle does not go past zero.
5. Starting at T.D.C., rotate flywheel counterclockwise until dial guage reads approximately 3-1/2 needle revolutions B.T.D.C.
6. Slowly turn flywheel clockwise until dial guage reads specified ignition timing. [(1.4 "+" or "-" 0.1mm (0.055 "+" or "-" 0.004 in)] B.T.D.C.
7. Check the marks on flywheel and base for alignment.
If not aligned, adjust ignition timing as follows:
a. Remove the manual starter assembly.
b. Remove the starter pulley and drive fan pulley.
c. Loosen the base set screws and turn the base assembly until mark alignment is achieved.
d. Tighten base set screw.
