Got the 500 apart. Spent a few hours on the carbs as they were really quite dirty. Oddly the fuel screws were at 2 out on one and a bit farther on the other. The cylinder that did not have the problem had a nearly completely plugged pilot jet. even the passage from the pilot jet to the hole under the slide was blocked partially.
So looking at the cylinder. The PTO one is perfect besides a bit more blow-by than a 2000 mile sled should have. The Mag side has the same blow-by stains and also has a multipoint seizure markings. The exhaust side of the piston below the rings is torn up as a bit on the 2 corners of the intake side. Much less damage on the intake side. I can supply pictures if there is interest.
The Cylinder is good above the ports. Below the ports there is some grooving. I will see what the local shop says. If it were my sled and I had an extra $200 laying around I think I would replace the jug.
