You drive all the way from Kentucky to get to the snow, so what's a few more miles to get to the really good snow? The good snow(in my opinion) starts at Frederic Exit 264 on I-75 and goes north. Check this site www.frederic-mi.com and scroll down to trail conditions. Pete posts daily on what's going on up there. More groomed trails in that area all the way to Gaylord and east and west.

Nope. In Florida now and will head north to do the Phatman on Otsego Lake the first weekend in March and then spend that week back at Starvation Lake for the Appreciation Party the following weekend. Race only stuff. No trails this year. Take old 27 north out of Frederic and you will run into all kinds of lodging along the way....Trail is right across the street. If you post Frederic or Gaylord on here someone should respond. Great riding if the snow is there. Most always is. I'll find a site for lodging and you can take it from there. May pm you. Happy trails.

Nope. Lakeland, 40 miles west of Orlando . Click on that frederic site again and scroll down to Wayside Inn Cottages. Pete, who gives the trail report and owns the Sledheads business up there, owns that cottage and rents it out I think. I don't know exactly where it is but there may be a phone number there and you can call him. He may also be able to give you some numbers for lodging up on old 27 north of Frederic. When you headin' north? I'll pm you my email if you need more info.

i agree with blue the gaylord / grayling area sucks, always busy and low snow the last few years.
Really, as far as you are already driveing, two more hours and you are accross the bridge and in the UP, way better riding than any trails in the lower half, i would really look into it, check paradise or newberry area's.

Ky, if you go just a little farther north to Alanson there is a great motel there, the Crooked river lodge. Best trails in N lower penninsula (Moosejaw trails)are 50 yds away. I own the property next door. Your welcome to go swimming in river at my dock! LOL. One of my tenents is a younger guy that rides the area all the time and would be happy to show ya around.

I agree completely! 2 more hours and world of difference in conditions and less traffic. There are plenty of places to stay in the UP along 75. There is a place in Kinross where they made a hotel of the officers barracks from the old Air Force base, 30 to 40 minutes from the bridge. The rooms are suites and really cheap and you can ride easily to the trails. Sault Saint Marie has lots of hotels from the big chains to mom and pop places. Brimley which is just west of the Soo and about 15 minutes off I-75 (exit 386) has a few hotels including one at the Indian Casino. All the places in this area are accessable to the trails.
If you need more details let me know.

Come on guys...The Gaylord area isn't that bad.....you just have to know where to ride. We can ride all day and only see maybe a dozen other sleds. The trails can get beat up quick on the weekends but usually by Tuesday thay are fixed back up (providing there is enough snow).
Conditions are great considering week got over a foot of snow in the last week.
Alanson area is still my favorite riding area. Up towards Cross Village and Pelston ALWAYS has a ton of snow and lots of great powerlines.

Tom,
I don't mean to bash your neck of the woods. My point is only that for someone like myself with no local knowlege and is most likely to use the trail system because I do not know the off trail locations, the UP is the better option.

Another good site to ck out trail reports is " Fishweb.com " click on snowmobiling!
PM me when you know your coming, and I might be able to make a 1 day trip if you decide to stay in lower michigan.

You guys are forgetting he's coming from Kentucky. That's a long drive to the UP from there. Right now it could be that the Gaylord area has more snow than the UP.

First I thank all of you with the help! Snow Xr I will let you know when we are coming for sure! looks like we will be there on the 15 th of feb & leave Friday at some time yet to be determined! . I understand if we go a little farther it might be "better snow" But I realy have nothing to compare to ! so Gaylord, Frederic is just fine believe me! A friend of mine said he would come & then volonteered to drive his Expedition! I want to come during the week to avoid any crowded trails , I mean Being from out of state is bad enough let alone the guy I a bringing has Never ridden a sled! (does own a Harley) So this way I can stay out of the way then the next time we come we can venture more north! Only bad thing, looks like I will be riding the 02 pro x 440 fan All that work to my SX!! But my buddy is a bigger guy probably switch out any way! Thanks again & I will still be here on TY asking things about the area! Dan

What's your buddy gonna ride? I think Pete at Sledheads in Frederic rents out a few. Might help you out some.
