Anyone have an opinion on plastic backers?
I'm going to stud my 03 Viper with 120 down the middle and was wondering about pros and cons of plastic backers.

I have them on my srx two seasons with no problems.
When installing them, I cracked two with the impact gun overtightning them.
Plus they add a splash of colour.

Dont go with plastic!!, seen so many studs been ripped out and lost with the backers. They are not tough at all, and im not talking about just crap in the trails wrecking them, theyre just too soft for the forces of studs exert on them. A few freinds had them before and they will never go back to plastic.
Go with aluminum backer plates, they work, and you can get them colored either with anodized or powder coated. I went with anodized and they hold up awsome, not even one scratch on them.

I must be really lucky with mine then.
I ride hard and in minimal conditions with no problems.

I tried plastic backers that thread on, they didn't work well I lost quite a few, changed them with plastic backers with steel nuts they work great. As for aluminun backers I think they bend too easy! just my opinion

we have used the fast-trac air lite backers with good results. They hold up decent, lightweight, and they look good (although the color does start to fade once you get a couple seasons on them).

I have 192 in my 121" track and I am going to put aluminum ones on if I ever put that track back under my sled. I believe they are not as strong as the aluminum backers. I have only broke 2 of the plastic backers and lost 1 stud in about 1500 miles so I don't think losing many studs will be an issue but I think they are lacking in holding the studs strongly. I also believe they cause some minor vibrations due to the backers letting the studs push back up and hitting the idler wheels. just my .02

what kind of track is that? My buddy's 02 viper vibrated like crazy when it had the stock track in with 144 studs and the proaction. We just put an expert x and a 9830 in it a few weeks ago with 168 studs and no more vibration. Could be the track, could be the suspension. Either way, he's happy, the vibration is gone.

When I bought my Vmax it was studded with plastic backers. The sled only had 350 miles on it and at least half of the backers were cracked or split. In my case the studs were all under-tightened. (it was a dealer stud job too) The heads of the studs were barely pulled down into the rubber at all. I replaced all of mine with steel, just cause the dealer had them in stock. I think if I was doing a new install I'd go with aluminum for the weight savings. I would stay away from plastic, even though they would probably hold up OK if properly installed. Just seems too vulnerable to me.
I used saber and lost half of them. But my buddy has no problems but he's just a slow trail cruiser and I ride hard and jump.If your an agggressive rider I wouldn't get them.

It is the stock .92 track for my 02 Viper with the stock skid.

I have to say the vibration is not that bad just a little noticeable. Annoying either way.

i have them on my viper and they work fine mine are red and the sled is blue they are red because it was and is an er my buddy that i bought it from hit a deer with it and that is why i needed all of those parts this summer and i wanted a blue sled and his was red so since i needed a hood because the old one was in a million pieces on the lake i bought a blue one and sold the red seat and loops and bought blue ones and since i made the sled blue i was going to put blue backers on but it was too much work just for color and it looks pretty good with them red and i have no problems with them oh and he was doing 60 when he hit the deer and it wiped him off the sled OUCH
I used blue Fastrac plastic backers. I have lost one in two seasons. Don't go with a cheap brand as they will crack and break.

Backers
Go with the plastic type that backs up to the lug of the track and you will have no problems.

I would like to go with the x-calibur ultra lite backer that has the nut built in - I have a bag of steel woody's backers, but the bag weighs 7 pounds. I only ride the trails and really not that agressively - I'm 42 and weigh about 260#, how agressive could I ride anyway.
