So I am on the steps of putting on my new clutch from the issue I had where my sled would not go over 35 mph, sometimes.

So while I have the clutches off the sled I started the motor to see if everything sounded healthy otherwise.

I get on the gas and it seems to hesitate a little, and does not go much over 5k rpms, or at least feels like it hesitates there. I would think with no load (not even a clutch on the motor) it would climb up rather quickly. Am I wrong in thinking this? My next step is to take the carbs off, clean them and the jets out. but it just seems likr w/o any load this motor should rev right up to a high RPM... Right??

As always,
thanks!

THe plugs are new (well very recently)

I did clean the carbs, well one of them (dont ask, screw was stuck on the other) so I hope its just something in that other carb that was not cleaned..

But I am correct in thinking this thing should rev up right?

Ont thing too, it did backfire on me (NEVER) has dont that before either,...

Clean both carbs, you need to do them both even if the one is a pain to take apart. (once you get it apart take a screw to your local hardware store, and find an allen head screw that matches it, replace all of the carb bolts with these) There are directions on the tech pages on how to clean the carbs. Once this is complete, put fresh plugs in it. (2 plugs should cost you less than 5$).

Do the carbs and the plugs and let us know how things go.

Yank the reed cages off while you have the carbs out and make sure the reeds are still sealing good and not warped, chipped, or broken. The gaskets are re-useable if you're carefull.

Take the time and check your exhaust for restrictions, I had the same problem and after checking everything else, I installed the original exhaust and BINGO..

Humm, not a bad thought, Maybe I will take it off and see if I have anything in there too!

Great info! Thanks!!!

Plan on taking carbs apart tonight, cleaning them good, replacing th escrews w/ an allen style head. Pulling the reed valves and checking them (expec some photos ;) ) and checking the exhaust for crtitters too!

I love this site!! :) Keep you posted w/ details.

I've been waiting to see how you made out with your vmax. I was having a similar problem with it not going over 50 MPH. Even though I do not know much about it, I thought it was a carb problem. Ended up taking it to the shop and they insisted it was a clutch problem. They replaced the rollers and gave it back. That didn't work so I took it back. Turns out they found a screw that had fell out in the carb. They called and told me it runs great now but I haven't had a chance to test it. NO SNOW! I am interested to see how you make out.

Okay here is whay I have done.. help PLEASE! :)

1 - replaced BOTH clutches
2 - Cleaned the carbs.
Took them off sled opened bowls up, sprayed carb cleaner down the jets blew it out w/ air, a few times, and re-installed
3- Cleaned reed valves, replaced gaskets on each. Both valves looked okay.
4 - cleaned out airbox
5 - Removed exhaust, blew it out w/ compressed air, seemed clear.

Stats..
Each cylinder has good spark, 120 PSI compression each jug

Without the clutch or anything on the PTO sidethe sled seemed to rev up okay, toped out at about 8k (normal??)

Once I had everything back together, with a NEW belt i strarted sled and gave her some gas. I wont know about the over 30 mph situation, and I stiull feel that was a clutch issue (at least part of the prob) but it seems the sled does not have the power it Should.

It feels like it take a while for the RPM's to climb, and even a few times the sled actually died when I pulled the throttle back fast from Idle.

Now, it is about 40 or so outside if that has any play on the motor acting how it is. And also only thing I did NOT do was change plugs, but I'm not convinced that this would make that much of a difference.

Could a fuel pump be weak? How do I test that?

Thoughts? I guess I wont know what it really does until I get it on some snow, but it just does not seem to have a lot of power when it up on the stand.

Suggestions? THings I missed?

Are both carbs opening at the same time? Take some pics down the carbs while they're closed, half, full(no need to run it). This is getting frustrating on this end as well. We did have an occasion on one of the 94's in our group had an issue with part of one carb coming apart, I'll have to call the guy tommorow to ask him what it was. Had another thought just now, one sec..........

Check that link out if you find the carbs not opening at the same time or one of them not at all.

You mean like the slides opening? Take photos say from the intake area? When I opened them manually as I cleaned them they seemed to slide up at the same time and rate. WOuld this be diff once in the sled?

Nope, Crap, probably ok if you looked while you had them off. Do a search on TORS and try that for giggles. Just to help you along, bypassing the tors means you connect the two wires together on the harness end NOT the carb end. This may have been affected when you had the carbs off. When you had the belt off, did the drive train turn ok by hand? I'll assume you checked the exhaust since it was mentioned in an earlier post. I'm about running out of ideas here.

Just looked at them, all opening okay. I know about the TORS but didnt try that at all, sure worth a try! I got nothing to lose at this point.

Drive train seems to turn fine by hand for I replaced all the sliders and hifax this evening and was moving it all by hand. Track even moves a little at idle. ALso seems this clutch engages lower RPM too... Im dumbfounded too!

Maybe its all as it SHOULD be, but just like others say here, these thigs run like hell etc..Im not feeling that w/ this sled. Wish I had another v-max to compare to.
