Turk,Mr.Viper......clutch questions

A guy I know has a helix with I.D. marks 8bv71. He thought it was the 51/43. I looked up the part numbers and it says it's a 47. I have a 01 SRX and was going to use the 8dn20's with 4.5 in each hole, the y/s/y primary and the green secondary. Will this 8bv71 helix work with this set-up or should i just get the 51/43. Also he has the pink spring for the secondary will this work or should I get the green and possibly will my stock spring work if i cannot get the green?
 
You have that same helix in the SRX right now..it comes stock with a straight 47.

what are my options then.....what is close enough to the 51/43 that it will still work fine? I'm not sure what else this guy has for helix's so I'd like to know what I can use that will still perform relatively the same.

Can I use my stock secondary with this set up? or should I go with the green one. He has a pink one ( or is it red )....will that work?

I mostly trail ride and just want to optimise the SRX and be competive in the odd race.
 
What are your rpm,s right now from holeshot to top speed?
 
I believe engagement is 3700rpm and the fastest I've had it going was approx. 80mph at about 8700 rpm. I just got the sled this year and haven't had much snow to really get a feel for the sled. And I'm just trying to understand this whole clutching thing....any help would be great....thanks
 
If your SRX is a 00-02 you should be 8400-8600 rpm at wide open throttle.There is about 1 month of reading if you do a search on SRX 700 clutching.

my red (stock) spring is working well with the 51/43 helix ( per Turk and others' suggestions)

it is wound to 70 degrees and i see about 8500-8550 top end
when it was wound to 80 degrees I was in the 8700 range,
dropping the windup down and getting back to 8500 was the difference between getting beat by a piped 700 Polaris and beating him.

this is with 4.5 rivets in the stock weights and a WWW spring (4200 engagement rpm)

get the right helix and springs and you will be glad.

thanks Ramb.....I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible. I already have the y/s/y spring, 4.5 Gr. rivets, but am having a hard time finding the green secondary. I thought I had heard someone say that they used their stock red spring. Also, would you know what helix I could use besides the 51/43. I've got a guy here in my area that has some helix's but am not sure exactly what he has. I'm going to talk to him tomorrow. I'm hoping that I could use something close to the 51/43 if he does not have exactly what I'm looking for since he gave me a price of $40.00 for the primary spring and helix.

From what I've been seeing on this forum this clutch set-up seems to really kick ***. I'm hoping to give some sleds around here a real surprise if we ever get any snow!
 
I am by no means an expert on what other helixes will work. I learned all this from Turk, Mr. Viper, and 2000srx. I read all the tech pages on clutching to understand and bought a 51/43 from 2000 srx (CBPerformance), the rivets and spring from the dealer, and it WORKED !!!!! big time :o)

the 51/43 is a stock rx1 helix. and 2000srx had a used one for me
I have another red spring I will sell really cheap for your cause :o) if you need it.
seems like the WWW spring was only $18-22 from the yamaha dealer?? can't remember for sure, but they had it for me in one day. the parts counter was not sure of the part number, but the service manager had a poster on his wall with the spring info.

let me know on the red spring.

I think the red spring is stock in my sled......I think....I haven't had it apart yet or even really looked at it to see what is in there. All I really need right now is the 51/43 helix. Thanks for the offer though. Do you think I would be happier with the www spring versus the ysy?
 
I don't know regarding the YSY spring . I have only tried the WWW. and the combo worked for me.
I guess try it and see. the YSY has an initial preload of 35kg, the WWW is 45KG ( WWW will have higher engagement rpm, 4200rpm), YSY is 3800 I think

the YSY spring's total force ( at full rpm) is 118KG, the WWW is 119kg ( same)
so Mr.vipers theory is the lower engagement helps you launch quicker ( in a drag race) without excessive spin, Turk, (and I guess I) like the higher engagment. I weigh 185 plus gear.

put a request on classified - want to buy ( WTB) a 51/43 helix, you may find a used one. or call CBPerformance directly or private message Bruce (2000srx) ( the "B" in CBperformance :o) Bruce is VERY helpful and will talk tech about any questions you may have and should have the helix.
