all of the things you described are normal. Most of the triples need a crack of the throttle to start when warm, otherwise it can sometimes take up to 5 pulls. The dimming is normal too. This is due to the lower stator output than that of a dual bulb style sled such as a 2001 and later model pro-action (may be 2000, can't remember.)

Just to rule out rings, do put a compression tester on your sled and see what kind of compression you have.
If its below 110 psi or if the compression in the cylinders isnt close to being even, you probably need rings.
Typically you should re-ring your engine every 10,000 miles and worn rings would explain why your sled is hard to start when the engine is warm.
On every reed valve equipped sled Ive ever owned you have to crack the throttle open when you pulled on the recoil to make it start, and its normal for them to smoke like crazy when the engine is cold.

Is their any way to upgrade the ststor, or is it not worth the trouble?

If you want to eliminate the headlight dimming, install an LED taillight -1157
It's not worth updating the stator unless you are converting to the twin bulb headlight(stator, guage pod,lens.....)
ummm,... the headlight will still dim down on idle ,regardless of the led taillight!crewchief47 said:If you want to eliminate the headlight dimming, install an LED taillight -1157

Oh ya! I must have been having one of those moments, Won't dim when you hit the brakes. Thanks for the slap upside the head.
